Mate of mine is looking at a C30 D5 equipped with the Geatronic Gearbox, which I believe is a robotized manual like Selespeed or some other early attempt at a DSG type box but doesn't work as well ?

I know nothing about them, your thoughts, any good ? avoid like the plague ? are they reliable or a nightmare ?

Car looks otherwise decent and he really wants it.

It's just a regular torque converter auto. All the boxes come from Aisin Warner and the same units are used in Toyotas, Saabs, Vauxhalls, all sorts of things. 5 gears in the C30, but later versions are 6 and now 8 speed. All AW boxes.

They're not bad, had the same early reliability issues as all 5 speed "sealed for life" boxes at first but will last a long time with fluid changes. Certainly a better choice than an ageing DSG or selespeed type box in terms of wallet buggering potential.

The engine is torque limited in 1st and 2nd gear in a C30 D5 to save munching the box, as it's right on the limit of the torque in can handle. A C30 D5 with a manual gearbox and a remap is an absolute hoot though!

I've heard horror stories about them, but our V70 2,T AWD has got one and it's been perfect.

I'm not really sure of the point of it though - beyond trying it out once for about one minute I have never ever used it.

The manual shifting is only the same as cars have had forever and ever where you could lock it into "this gear and lower", even a 70s Jaguar could do that. I use it for engine braking down hills or to get it ready for a sneaky overtake.

The one in my V70 made it to 150k suffering horrendous abuse and is still working.

The horror stories are usually because they were marketed as "sealed for life" by Volvo, whereas the exact same gearbox was given a 40-60k fluid refresh schedule when put into other cars from other manufacturers.

Give them oil changes and they'll run and run. Keep them on the same oil from the factory and they'll kill themselves on old, knackered fluid.
