Having been almost run down by a prat on a push bike cycling through a red light for the 4th time in a week, I'd like to know what's going on? What gives these selfish scumbags the right to ignore all of the rules? I mean, when was the last time you saw one get nicked for cycling on the pavement? Used to get had up for it all the time when I was a kid, so what's changed? B****rds. I'm bonna take up running them over and see how they like it!

My 6 year old nephew said something to me that really made me think. As we were driving along he asked why cars had number plates and bicycles didn’t? At least if there was some kind of identification system (obviously a huge number plate would be a bit odd ) then the cyclist couldn’t just shoot off down some side street and remain anonymous, they’d then have to take the consequences of their actions.

Does anything like this exist for the professional courier companies who use bicycles around London for example?

Come off it my son! You try taking your life into your hands and riding to work through rush hour. It's life-thretening stuff! How anyone can be annoyed at the behaviour of cyclists is beyond me - I mean did the bike hit you?

Agree that cycling through a red light is a bit stupid if there are pedestrians/cars around. I generally get off, push the bike round the junction on the pavement and start off again....

Huh? Did it actually hit me? That's not the bloomin' point. A previous encounter resulted in me being on the receiving end of a tirade of abuse for pointing out to some bint that really she should have stopped as I was on a zebra crossing at the time.

There are laws about this sort of thing, laws that are failing to be enforced whilst motorists who DO obey the law are persecuted by the same cycle-NAZIs who think they are above the law. Next time, I'll push the tw@t off and give them a good kicking.

Cyclists really are the red headed step child of the transport world.

Too slow to keep up with moving traffic they are hated by motorists. Too fast to be used off the road, they are hated by pedestrians. To cap it all off, you get the arrogent, almost suicidal cyclists who give us all a bad name.

Me, I stick to the pavements where I can. I would rather some dozy bint of a pedestrian goes under my wheels, then I go under the wheels of some dozy bint of a school run mum

Edited to add: When I am on the road I do stop and red lights/zebra crossings and generally obey the laws of the road that matter :P

Apparently, cyclists kill two pedestrians a year on average. I can't remember where I read it, but it was on some government statistics website.

But you're not supposed to be there, are you? Fine, you run over an adult, they should have been more aware of what was going on and probably will get off quite lightly, but if you hit a toddler imagine your own worst case scenario. It's no different to me driving a car down the pavement.

Plus you don't have insurance do you? So you injure someone, you just p1ss off and it's tough luck for the person that you've hurt. I was in a car that was hit by a cyclist riding the wrong way out of a one way street and the rider couldn't operate the brakes because she was carrying a bag of shopping in one hand and a bottle of vodka in the other, came through the windscreen she did, who do you think paid for the damage?

Well done, but are there any that don't matter?

Get this into perspective:

Cars breaking the rules = lots = very dangerous

Cyclists breaking the rules = some = annoying

Sort out the first before you complain about the second. Most cyclists are drivers and like myself are extremely cycling proficient.

If car drivers piolted their vehicles like many cyclists do they'd loose their licence in no time. There are some cyclists that i feel sorry for as they try and legally fight their way through rush our traffic. There are however a lot more that go through red lights, ride on the pavement, fail to signal, fail to give right of way, ride 3 abrest etc etc etc. Every lunch time i walk into town to get my lunch and will have to leap out of the way of at least one cyclist who insists on riding through a pedestrian crossing that is full of pedestrians

No, Im not but I like to think that I ride curtiously and if there is a child around I will be carefull. I ride not much faster than walking pace if im around others on the pavement and I can certainly stop quick enough. If the pavement is too narrow for a cyclist and a pedestrian I will either stop and wait, return to the carriageway or get off and push. I always travel at a speed that allows me to stop in the distance I can see to be clear.

Im a responsible adult, I can take responsibility for my actions. If I had an accident I wouldnt just bugger off without stopping, its just wrong to.

There are many laws which I choose to ignore when i feel it is safe to do so. I will ride on the pavement, I will exceed the posted speed limit in a car and I make progress with other like minded drivers (some less tolerant would assume Im racing) I use my judgement to decide when it is safe too.

It might be naughty but I can live with myself

This is horrendously generalised. Most cyclists do not act like complete morons, and deserve more respect from drivers than they actually receive. I'd say more of the time I'd side with the cyclists (being one myself as well!) - drivers are can be extremely short on patience when sitting behind you waiting to pass, making you feel uncomfortable (not a surprise we often resort to just getting up on the pavement is it?)... that is if, indeed drivers actually do decide to be patient - more often than not they actually pretty much run you off the road rather than give a bit of space.

I agree that there are some psycho cyclists out there.. but hey ho, there are psychos everywhere. Don't generalise!!

Another 'cyclist' thread
I agree with the ID system, I'd happily have a plate attached to my bike providing the necessary/corresponding procedure was applied to motorists who do stupid things too. I've ad my share of BiB saying "It's your word against theirs" shite when scumbags have thrown a can of Carling at you and you have the reg. be nice to know that you they could follow things up.
As for the thread title?
I thought PH was all about respect where it's due; good motorists earn respect yet aren't tarred with the same brush as the Middles Lane Morons or reps-with-map-on-knee-whilst-on-phone areseholes. I might start a thread "What's with motorists?", you see what I mean.
You get good cyclists and bad cyclists, the latter capable of causing accidents yet not necessarily being 'involved' in them. Many cyclist I know are real petrolheads and big contributors to road tax by virtue of their 3 or 4 cars sat at home while they're on their bikes.
However, one candidate for a good pasting of many a motorist is by choice, a non-driver and has never owned a car. He rides like a fcucking imbecile and has been told so many times by me. Like many a driver though, it goes in one ear....
There are places I avoid unfortunately because I know that some groups of cyclist use these placess regularly and treat the roads like their own, which gets peoples backs up, and consequently, if I pass through, I get genreal malevolence directed at me.
Makes me sick.
Think twice before generalising against a whole section of road users.

I'm not trying to generalise, but what I see on a daily basis, walking to and from work, is both drivers and cyclists behaving extremely irresponsibly.

I'm not talking as a driver here, either, but as a pedestrian. Seeing push bikers trying force there way through a crossing packed with people really makes my blood boil. What about respect for pedestrians?

I would like to know where my rights as a pedestrian come into this? If I wish to cross the road, being quite sensible and not wishing to get run over, I either use a zebra crossing or a pedestrian crossing with lights. There is no ambiguity at all about what road users (buses, trucks, cars, tanks, mopeds, bicyles, tricycles, rickshaws, pogo sticks etc.) are obliged to do by law.

Equally so, the safe haven as a pedestrian is the footpath, note the wording, I did not say cyclepath. As far as I am aware, it is still illegal to ride a bicycle on the footpath except where it's use is explicitly permitted and the appropriate signage and markings are in place. So I really don't subscribe to this belief that there is nothing wrong with cyclists being there. If you run me over and I break a wrist or something and cannot work, are you going to pay my wages for me whilst I recover? I thought not.

Sorry, this is flawed logic. Just because something doesn't kill you, doesn't make it "okay". And, as I pointed out in a previous thread, goodness knows how many cyclists are killed each year because they've been cycling like idiots and the consequent trauma caused to the driver of the car.

Dead true. I had a creaming fit against a guy on a bike a few months ago near where I live. Dead of winter, unlit NSL A-road, NO LIGHTS
The car who overtook me doing warp 9 swang back in just in time to very nearly take him out.
I slowed from 60 to nought to get out and ask him what the fcuck he thought he was doing. He looked at me like I was daft.
Which I'm not, I'm just mad.
