Would inoperative power steering (electric) be a fail?

Power steering warning light is on (separate warning light to normal engine management light)

Car still steers and drives fine, just with heavy steering. No faults in the rack/track rod ends etc

A quick Google suggests yes it's a valid failure.

If it fails, It will be the warning light that gets you. I used to use my TVR with the relay for the PS removed - never failed an MOT or mentioned on the advisories.

I have just put mine in for an MOT and service and asked them to investigate a louder than normal whine coming from the power steering pump.

No lights on the dash just a whine and this caused an MOT failure.

New pump was £500 but then managed to strip it down and repair it for half that, or rather a local specialist did.

There is nothing in Section 2.3 of the DVSA MOT Inspection Manual that says a whine from the pump is per se a reason for rejection.

If it was still providing adequate power to the steering it should have been an advisory with a recommendation for prompt remedial action..
