Impacted with a tree at about 40 after a bend. Airbags, etc Im fine
Car I think is written off. 996 tt

Police will have a chat with me later. At home now. No others involved apart from me overtaking and coming back on my side ready for a tight left bend.

Doing 60-70 Braking nicely, no sign of locking wheels, then about 40 m before the bend ABS kicks in? dont know why, wasnt on the point of lock, keep ABS on try to stear round bend at about 40, bend is a 20mph bend go across and into a tree at about 40mph.

Thank God nothing else was coming and thank Porshce the car is very strong, no deformation into the cabin. Got out via passenger door as drivers wedged into branches. Both Air bags went off.

Not sure why the ABS kicked in. It was going fine until then, braking well, as soon as the ABS kicked in I lost about 50 of the braking it felt.

Took a few photos, dont know how to host but if I can email someone in a day or so you may be interested in the state of the car.

Tree impacted (I impacted)dead centre of bonet to about half way fron the front to the screan.

Just calming down, Lucky Im ok. Car is written off for sure.

Just try and calm yourself down. Hot bath and hot choccy time. It's only a lump of metal. You'll get a new shiny one soon enough.

Very sorry to hear that - glad you are ok - this is what you've been paying insurance premiums for, so don't stress about the car - its only metal. Police will be fine as no others involved.

As for ABS kicking in - your wheels must have lost traction somehow - was it wet? Did they go onto painted lines? - White lines have almost killed me a few times!!

really sorry to hear that, but clearly glad you are ok.

looking on the bright side of things, it does mean you can get all excited about finding and buying a replacement.

can i recommend a gt2? i find i drive much more cautiously now than ever before, hence i am (hopefully) less likely to have an accident...

Never mind that. Either a CTR or uv's T2 beast looks the best option to me. The choice will at least take your mind off it all.

I'd guess diesel on the road. It's caught me out once, causing me to almost understeer into a kerb. A mate of mine almost spun his IS200 going 'round a 15 MPH corner when he hit a patch of diesel.

My former boss wrote off his Saab 9-5. He hit a car that had gone off the road and into a ditch after hitting diesel. As he got out of his car, another car came sliding into the ditch too!

Diesel's a real bugger, and hard to spot on the road. Anyway, glad you're OK.

Errr... that's how ABS works? It kicks in when it detects that you're already skidding.

Sorry to hear about the car tho chap Still, that can be replaced - you can't

...absolutely!! I did a similar thing a few months ago, and whilst it's annoying about the car, the most important thing is that nobody is hurt... and I personally felt very lucky that that was the case!

Sorry to hear that superlight. Gutted for you but at least metal things are replaceable, although that's probably scant consolation for you right now.

Does sound like diesel. Did you get a good look at the road surface afterwards?

the braking was going well, good feel, was wet but not standing water, not too close to locking then the abs kicks in and lost 50% of the braking hence needing double the stopping distance and a tree!

Thanks for the kind words. First scratch Ive had in 18 years of driving. Might as well make it a big un.

Might get suspended from observing for Rospa.

Almost exactly the same thing happened to me several years ago, but in a much less expensive car. Only difference being I went straight into the path of an oncoming car...BANG!(Everyone was OK)
It's amazing how quiet everything is immediately following an accident isn't it?
At least you're OK...

Commiserations but glad you're OK. Maybe worth going back and checking the road surface (without getting run over!) to see if there's an explanation for the sudden loss of grip, e.g. diesel as others have proposed.

Couldn't agree more, both for your peace of mind (that it wasn't your fault) and for the safety of others - if there is diesel on the road then there needs to be a warning at the very least. I rang the police after my brush with diesel and within 2 hours the road had been treated.

Glad to hear you escaped uninjured.

Paul

I dont know why the ABS kicked in - I dont like whingers so Im not going to whinge.
I did not think I was at the point of locking for the ABS to cut in. I had already braked well from about 70 to 40 ish with no problems. Perhaps I did make a bad mistake, just dont understand what I did wrong. I will no doubt contemplate it for a long time.

Hope the police dont prosecute me. No points no claims etc untill now. Big wake up call for me.

pleased my 6 mth old twin girls still have a stupid dad to cry/scream at.

Impressed with the porsche crash structure.

Their loss, then. Glad to hear you are OK. IMO being in a crash is very, very good for one's driving. Afterwards you have a MUCH better appreciation for how fast things go wrong. So IMO it *adds* to your Observing qualifications....provided you don't take this up as a habit!
