A mate is about to buy a laptop primarily to do video editing.

He has been given a choice by his supplier of two different processors.

Centrino 735, and a Athlon 64 3400+

Apart from the processors, the machine specifications are identical, and the prices are almost idetical.

Any idea which processor he should be leaning towards?

The Athlon.

The instruction set on AMD chips lends itself to media heavy applications primarily.

Whilst I would also go for the Athlon 64 (in fact I've just bought the Acer Ferrari 3400 laptop) in preference to the Centrino, Intel processors have traditionally been quicker at video encoding, whilst AMD have had the edge in gaming. However I have not seen any tests that specifically test this for the AMD64 cpu.

Of equal importance would be the video card. If you have a video card that can take the encoding load off the cpu, such as the ATi Mobility Radeon 9700, then cpu performance is not so critical (though still important).
