I've been looking for a new car recently and the F30 BMW 328i looks hard to beat for its combination of modernity, price and performance.

245 bhp and 258lb ft and £150 to tax it sound decent enough.

The downside is the stories about timing chains slipping and wrecking the engine - a lot more serious than just bent valves.

So rather than keep increasing the budget to a 2015 onwards car I believe there is a revised timing chain kit that can be fitted to the earlier cars. Does anybody know the likely cost of such an operation? I'm just going to view this as preventative maintenance much like a cambelt change albeit with a higher cost.

I know thousands of these engines have been made but taking the chance with something that can destroy the engine isn't an option I want to take.

No way this is 380...
Parts needed include timing chain, sprocket, valve cover gasket, sump gasket, oil pump chain module, chain guides, crank bolt, serpentine belt, antifreeze, engine oil, oil filter, various bolts and screws

Tools include timing tool, flywheel lock tool, maybe front crankseal removal and refit kit , various torque wrenches, 3/4 inch 3.5 foot breaker bar. Tool costs alone are 3-400. Parts the same labour probably 8 hours around 4-500. So all in around 1200-1300.
