Gearshift Weight
Discussion
Guys,
Having picked up my new (well new to me anyway) Chim yesterday and managed to do just under 250 miles in the first afternoon i was wondering how heavy the gearshift should be particularily when going into first.
Ok, so i have been used to driving big comfy automatics for the last few years so probably need to bulk up the left arm and leg a fair bit but even so the gearchange does seem very, very, heavy especially when the car was getting hot on the home stretch waiting to get through the Blackwall tunnel. The trauma of waiting quickly dispelled by the noise when going through however
It mainly seems to be getting into first that it is the problem with it quite often not going in first time and needing a right good shove to get it in second try, this seems to be at its worst when hot so i presume something is expanding/needing lubricated. Everything seems fine between the other gears with it being quite a heavy shift but little trouble to manage when on the move, and no nasty noises going into reverse so long as i stick it in 5th first.
Is this normal?
Cheers

Don't shove it in - if it won't go in easily, roll the car slightly in 2nd or 3rd (or let it roll back an inch or two) and it should go in fine.
If it doesn't, I'd say keep an eye on it.
Also, don't engage reverse without first selecting fifth (you don't need to drive it in 5th, just select and then reverse).

All good then, had a read of some previous posts on the subject from way back and it does seem relatively normal. Had a nice run into Greenwich with the roof down earlier and it was perfectly happy going in smoothly second time every time so it is just going to take some getting used to i think.
Worst thing comes to the worst i have a years warranty so any serious issue should show itself way before then.
Cheers

The guys at Fernhurst drilled the forward gear before reverse thing into me during the test drives and when they took me through the car when i collected it so well aware of that one and no nasty noises as yet. Seems that going to 3rd before 1st also makes a big difference in mine, although will likely get the gearbox oil changed and have the linkages looked at to see if there is anything mechanical that can be done to improve it.
Incidentally it seems the accelerator pedal is also pretty weighty, hopped in the Jag for the commute to work this morning and having driven the Chim for the last 2 days just about launched myself into the car park wall by using similar pedal pressure. Nice way to wake up in the morning, doh!

Wicked Tip, never did that before and got a slight grind, now no grind at all
Just helps to slow the box down a bit... strangely it doesn't always seem necessary on mine.
