520D M-Sport going back in next few weeks.

Doing 20-25k p.a., my policy is always to buy a decent spec car at 1 year old having suffered heavy depreciation; before running for 3 years.
Must be a decent size, have a good stereo, comfortable over a long run and offer reasonable running costs.

Circumstances have changed slightly, and I now want 4wd as I will be driving c. 300 miles / week on Welsh A/B roads year-round. Whilst I have loved my 5, the new ones are still too dear price-wise with AWD and a decent spec; plus I fancy something different.

I am about to hit the button on a 9 month Volvo V90 Cross-Country D5 which is fantastically specced.

However- at last minute, I am suddenly drawn to a Skoda Superb 2.0 TFSI with 276bhp. 0-60 in 5.5secs and lots of toys. Also works out a fair bit cheaper than the Volvo.

Key question is- what sort of economy will I realistically get from a 4wd 286bhp 2 litre petrol engine across 20k miles? I am also fairly enthusiastic with the old right foot.
Will the smile factor and lower cost outweigh the additional £/mile?

Any experience of this engine in a bigger car?
All input appreciated!
Thanks

At a guess, fuel consumption will he high...

If I owned an oil well, it would be on my shortlist.

Audi S3, slightly more powerful version engine at 296 bhp
Lighter car however
After 55k of good driving, 27.6 mpg
Say you get 30mpg as some trips were a bit short....and I like my right foot

OK- so based on above- I reckon I would average c. 27mpg

Skoda:- 22500 miles @ 27mpg = 833 gallons p.a. = c. 3750 litres @ £1.15 = £4300 p.a.

vs

Volvo:- 22500 miles @ 40mpg = 562 gallons p.a. = c. 2529 litres @ £1.17 = £2958 p.a.

Skud = £1342 more p.a.; £4k over the 3 years in fuel.
I reckon it might get through tyres a tad quicker as well...

Even my man maths struggling to make this one stack up!

Guess I'd better conform to type and get myself a brown cardigan then...

That is considering fuel only?

I thought the reasoning behind considering the Skoda would be that the lower purchase price would offset the increased running costs?

Check out this thread over on Briskoda for real-life fuel economy...

Oh, and the only colour you should consider is Dragon Green!

I’ve put 34000 on mine in 10 months. A 150 mile trip to Birmingham saw 30.4 mpg on Friday. Average over the life of the car so far is 27.6.

Not had any issues with it. It’s done a set of tyres and brakes. Anything with umbrellas in the door has to be a winner!

Sport mode is addictive and you will never get tired of leaving people behind at lights....buts it’s just a big skoda estate....oh how I chuckle!!
