Disappointment in modern computer games...
Discussion
Not sure if I'm the only one.
It's not every game. But lots of them. They all seem so scripted and too many effects rather than gameplay.
My all time favourite game is DOOM. Everything about it is right in my opinion. Ultimate DOOM, DOOM II and Final DOOM are all brilliant. Even DOOM 64 wasn't half bad in terms of game play.
All I've been waiting for over the years is a modern version of these games, i.e. the same game, just with nice modern graphics.
Doom 3 was a bag of s
te. Probably fine if it was called anything other than "Doom", but it just wasn't Doom in gameplay (or even story). It seemed to only be labelled as Doom to enhance sales by linking with an established franchise.
Just got the new Doom on the Xbox One, ok I know it's not brand new, but it's the most modern Doom. People kept telling me I'd love it, it's just like the original. Is it f
k!!!
At least not what I've seen so far.
I've not completely given up on it. Just need to calm down and get over the disappointment before going back to it.
But from the start I knew it was going to piss me off. I truly hate games that start in the middle, i.e. you get a weird cutscene then suddenly you are being attacked. No chance to see what the screen content looks like or how the controls work --- why must so many games start this way??? It's so f
king irritating!!!!!!
Gripe 2. So far everything looks horrid. DARK DARK DARK DARK, so you can't see an f'ing thing on the screen. Again - why?
Turned the Gamma up so at least you can see the shadowy shapes, but there just is no need. One of the best things about the original game was it was so bright and easy to see what was going on and what you are doing.
Gripe 3. f
king objectives..... why must all games do this? I don't want objectives in a game, have enough of those at work. Again the original was all about figuring out what to do on each level, not being told you must do this.
Gripe 4. What I've seen so far it's just scripted and little freedom. i.e. nothing to interact with and you must go this way. 100% at odds with what ID did in 1993
Gripe 5. I don't get the cut-scenes when a new monster appears or when you open a door. Again why? Every f'ing game of this genre seems to do this same old s
te. Why interrupt gameplay for pointless clips
Some examples. In the original game you start here:

Nothing attacking you straight off
You can see what is about you
You get chance to check the controls
There are even some barrels and things to interact with
And you have no idea where to go. You have to explore!
And when you come across an enemy the game doesn't stop to play a video, nor does it have to make out that it's something special, it's just part of the game. And it doesn't tell you when you have to click a button!!!
This is the first level of the new game. A dark wall that you must walk into and press a button...... wow that's boring boring.

And the level is dark and dingy and seems to be lacking detail.

The old games graphics might be rubbish by today's standards, but at least there was detail, distance and depth and you could see what was happening.

Is it really so much to expect that in over 20 years, nobody seems to be able to strike the same formula as the original Doom and it seems least of all the more recent games actually called Doom

But it wasn't Doom, that's my point. If it was called anything other than Doom it would have been fine. But it has sweet F A to do with Doom.
I thought it was pretty Doom-y overall. Why do you think it wasn’t? Games evolve over time and change.

There's your problem right there. Doom should only be played on a PC, not on some kiddie's toy.
k!!!
Get yourself a decent gaming PC, an Oculus Rift and Doom VFR/Doom 3:BFG VR Edition, and experience Doom is as it was originally intended to be played....with sweaty palms and a racing pulse-rate.

I'd love to see some recommendations. I can't get excited enough to pull the trigger on any of this generation's consoles.
The games are all way too long, way to "objective-y" and far to reliant on multiplayer.
I'm not 14 years old anymore so the idea of investing 80 hours of walking around a "fully realized world" is utterly unrealistic. What happened to 1) put disc in console 2) turn on console 3) enjoy some quick gaming action for 1 hr. If i find i have more time, let me get better at something rather than just trudge endlessly for objectives (looking at Witcher and all the games that want to be grown-up Zelda...)
If I wanted to waste 3 weeks of my life exploring an unfamiliar world I'd take time of work and go to Cambodia. I'd love to see some of the more arcade-y titles re-made with cutting edge visuals - Ridge Racer, Twisted Metal, Virtual On, Powerstone etc...

You're not! I completely agree with everything you've said and it's the reason why I just don't enjoy games anymore. Exploring is no longer allowed in any game, everything is set with a predefined route that you must take (with the exception of games like GTA and dare I say it, Minecraft) and you are not allowed to figure things out for yourself, we will give you handy tool tips telling what to press and where to look throughout the entire game.I blame the kids of today. They have the attention span of a goldfish and so if they have to figure anything out for themself which takes more than 10 seconds they give up and say the game is too hard, hence the endless tool tips holding your hand all the way through.
I think Doom is replayed so much, mainly because of its nostalgia value, and the fact it was the best of it's time. Compared to a modern game, it has little replay value, a mininalist plot and a simplified play style.
Doom 3 wasn't too bad, although it was more enjoyable if you were prepared to accept that It's nothing at all like the original. As for Doom 2016, I thought it was brilliant and as close to the original Doom as you'll get these days. Super fast movement, no reloads, overpowered weapons, simple (compared to its rivals) story. What's not to like?
The original Doom is like the Peugeot 205, we won't see anything quite the same again. But if you try and embrace the change, you can still enjoy the modern stuff.
