Hi

Probably a stupid question, but is anyone using an Xbox mainly as a multimedia streaming device? I have a Kindle Fire, Roku and Apple TV in different rooms currency and they all have shortcomings. The Roku and Amazon devices I find clunky and slow. The latest Apple TV is great in terms of operation, but lacks Amazon Prime Video, ITV Hub and Channel 5 Player. It’s also expensive and the ability to mirror my iPhone is a minor upside - downside is that it’s expeisve for what it is, in fact in the back Friday sales the cost of a 500GB Xbox is only £30more.

I have little interest in gaming so that would be a fringe benefit.

Also, what other functions can it perform? Can I look at image files on CD/DVD media for W sample.

Thanks in advance

I use my Xbox one as my main media device, and it works brilliantly.

Netflix, amazon video and plex all built in, and a bluray player, hooked up to an AV amp all working with voice command...

Hey cortana....On / off (switches on TV, amp and xbox) , goto netflix, volume up, play,, pause... all work really well.

Plex streams perfectly from a wired network, no problems receiving mkv rips from the pc in the next room over homeplugs.

Does the job for me and I've finally retired my ancient Boxee Box smile

I have an Xbox one X and PS 4 Pro and have used both for gaming and media centre duties.

PS4 - quicker startup, apps seem to be updated more frequently, system updates are quick to install. But the interface is awful, just really badly designed like a linux box. Also still no official remote control so have to use the gaming controller which runs out of batter all the time.

XBox One X - had a XBox One normal before the X and the interface is a joy to use, so simple and effective. You can use the original XBox one remote control which is really simple and therefore no need for the gaming controller. However the system seems to need updates at the most inconvenient times and you can't use online services till it is update. But there is an option to keep the system in low power and do updates automatically. I've used YouTube, Plex, Amazon Prime, Netflix, NowTv etc and all work perfectly on both systems. The Xbox One S and X have the UHD BluRay player which is an excellent addition and we have watched quite a few movies now which look stunning using a 4K HDR TV.

I've found using the Xbox One X for local media streaming (DLNA) is really poor. No support for Dolby Atmos or DTS:X and it won't play HDR movies.

And for whatever movies it will stream, it does so at 60fps :-|
