In another thread, re: heart attacks
z4monster said:
Are you generally fit, non smoker with good diet, average bodyweight and taking regular exercise?

Fit, no. Had a 6pac, now have some kind of tyre

Smoke like a chimney

Drink like a fish

I excercise my fingers on PH, am considering buying a piano this year too

What have people done to turn things around? Its easy enough to think of improvement, but improvement works best in reality with replacement, else it goes to pot.

Im not sure what clubs or whatnot to join to get back into tip top and genuinely turn things around. Its too hard to just say no, without motivation or alternative vices

Bob. I`m the same as you! Bad news is.....we are all going to die someday. Good news is...If you are as unfit as me, it will be a quick exit via a heart attack or similar.

If you are one of these healthy types, it just means you have longer in the incontinent/dribbling years.

Join a Gym - there is a David Lloyd in Eastbourne isn`t there?

I joined my local gym in order to lose weight, but they blew it by telling me I had to visit once in awhile - what a waste of PH time.

Shut it wedge

Towman, got loads of heart attack deaths in the family. As a kid, I was the fittest/fastest in every school I went to, won every sporting award in the book. These days, im the unfittest person of my age I know. Puffing like a train after 3 flights of stairs, Not especially over weight, just pushing heart attacks most likely! If I had friends in a sport of some sort, Id be inspired to make sure I was there on time, but I dont know what to take up. Feels like its been too long... probably because it has :s

Well, I think one of the main points of the other thread is to find some sort of physical activity you like, and can do regularly. Swim, walk, whatever.

If you can, ditch the cigarettes. It's tough but this would be the biggest improvement. If you live with other smokers it would help if all would stop at once, otherwise you sort of re-infect each other.

So long as you don't go overboard drink is OK, particularly red wine.

If you can get on a walking program at least then giving up the smokes is easier, usually once one starts to exercise the desire to smoke tails off.

Lifestyle. If you habitually hang out at the pub smoking, drinking, and eating high calorie stuff, well you'll have to cut back on that some.

And no need to go overboard. Try to cut back on the smokes, get out for 3 20 to 30 minute walks a week, and trim back portions of whatever you eat. Don't go overboard and sign up for a program that will make you miserable and that you won't stay with.

You will feel better, stopping smoking will make your food taste better (and will cause some weight gain that's actually your internal organs returning to their normal size, it's not fat, so dont' worry about that)

Improved fitness will help your driving, at least some. And lost weight off your body counts as much as taking weight off the body of the car. Admittedly this is more noticable on a bike, but in a small car it does count.

I'm trying to shed about a stone myself. Got about 5 lbs of it off already.

Good luck.

Mitch. I doubt if there are many smokers who dont truthfully want to give up. I have tried so many times, but the (relative) boredom of the job I do makes it difficult.

Bob - thought about getting a dog? We did that and the amount of exercise I got went up dramatically.

How is an ugly woman going to get you more excercise?

Seriously though, yes. But I cant, it would cramp my lifestyle. Grew up with dogs, and wont have them again until I have a house with a big garden and a family to share the responsibilities.

I forgot to mention - the reason Im now taking the issue so seriously (not the about ugly women thing, the heart attack one) is partly because I eat red meat two to three times a day. I dont do cereal for breakfast. Easy enough to change that one though I suppose.

UKBob,
had a heart attack out of the blue last December....so I can feel for your angst, was relatively fit but couldn't exercise due to a damaged foot, had given up fags 18 years ago...then BANG!!!

FIRST STEP......really important give up fags...there is NO other main cause which rates so high for an attack
SECOND...keep fit doing whatever pushes your button, doesn't have to be a 6-pack thingy, just regular 3 times a week 130 beat per min heartrate exercise for 30 minutes minimum
THIRD....get your cholesterin regularly tested and keep it DOWN (using drugs if prescribed, don't do the american thing and take them without advice, this can kill you just as fast).... at the same time get your Lipids tested especially LPa as a high LPa is 10-15 times more likely to cause a heart attack than just high cholesterin (my case and its hereditary).
You can still eat well just not so many chips hamburgers and other junk food and alcohol is not a no-no just keep it reasonable a glass (1/4l) wine a day or a pint in the evening will not harm you...

If you want anything further you can contact me through my handle direct....Good Luck, John

Gave up smoking. But full of stress, I am sure this is what is going to see me off.

It's true that we're all going to die someday but I want to do everything before I die.

My sister in law has recently died aged 43 due to her lifestyle. She was obese, smoked and took no excercise. She had a brain aneurysm which was diagnosed when she was 18 and treated successfully.
However, her lifestyle was such that she did nothing to prevent it happening again. She had a massive cerebral bleed and died, leaving two kids in their teens without their mum. My niece is getting married this year, she now has to do this without her mum around.

I am sure she would have rather been here for that event but she isn't. Would you rather die young or live a longer life and die happy.
I know which I want for myself.
