New job coming...

And I have to choose a van.. I'm pretty much left alone to choose what I want within a monthly budget, which has been set at a lower than expected £350. If I have to spend more I'll be justifying it, and saving some money somewhere else I suspect - probably on my office which may nor work for me...

It will have to be a crew van as I want it to perform family duty on occasions and my role is higher than 'van' man. With my role comes quite a bit of kit, which for the last year I have been carting around my car, effectively taking it to a 2 seater without hassle of emptying it. (new job includes my old job on steroids (It's #complicated)).

I like the new Pug / Citroen Expert/Dispatch, but the specs are weird, and only low power engines in crew.
VW is probably out of price range - and very expensive. Vito likewise - and I don't like the way the loadspace integrates into the passenger compartment.
Transit Limited has a good spec, and has a higher power 170hp option. But it's a transit, and I don' want to look like I'm selling Tarmac.

Any suggestions or experience of these? Appreciate it's not very PH and a bit specialist...

The transits are great vans & will serve you well plus the extra power will make itself each & everyday.

Don't overlook Transits. Our dually dropside is a tremendous utility vehicle. Shame they don't put the 3.5 Ecoboost or the bigger diesels in them here.

You need one of these: https://www.ms-rt.co.uk/ms-rt-transit-custom/

The current Vivaro/Trafic is a pretty decent steer for a van, and the BiTurbo diesel goes reasonably well. The Eco mode is genuinely useful around town as it lowers the engine torque so it’s not quite so jerky due to the short gearing. Not sure I’d want to drive one all the time though, still nowhere near as refined as a car.

+1 on the Vivaro. I had a Crewcab Sportiv in my last job and it had all the gadgets you'd want.

The Vivaro Traffic are out. I'm not doing miles with that racket.

One of the attractions to the pug and citroen is car like noise levels.... at least in the numbers... Just not sure I can actually get one in budget...

I've not driven a newish transit so no idea on how noisy they are....

Ford transit customs are great vans. No doubt about it. I've had vivaros / transporters / transits - and currently on a 66 plate transit custom.

I wouldn't get another one though. These vans are getting broken into all over the place. Ford know about the issues but do nothing. Insurance premiums are through the roof. I don't now anyone on the tools who would get another one. Shame as it's a great van otherwise. Lots of nice touches like LED lighting - inverter power socket up front etc. You can get these on a lease cheaply now. About £210 a month all in. Mine is one down from the top spec and it costs me £169 a month + VAT. Lease over two years with 3 months up front. No tax or services required for me. All under warranty.

But get insurance quotes first!!

Really good deals to be had on the Fiat fullback, would that work with the equipment you carry?

I wouldn't want to drive a transit daily personally however as a crew van they are good. Used one daily for 2 years to london and back with 6 guys and tools every day, never put a foot wrong,

We run 3 fiats are they are solid vans we have 1 new one 2 over 10 years old with over 100,000 they are abused and just keep going.

I have a Citroen Berlingo with the basic 1.6 diesel engine its fine for the size but any bigger I would consider either the higher power options. Mine has apple car play air con cruise so is a good place to be. We have 2 of these and it is remarkable the difference in engine feel/performance between mine (motorway 90%) and the foreman (50/50 dual carridgeway/a and b roads).

I had the dispatch on hire last week.

Surprisingly refined and plenty of kit, most car like van i've driven.

I took delivery of a Transit Custom Limited spec (double cab) last month as a replacement for my Citroen C4 grand Picasso.

I'm very pleased with it, the bulk head does make a difference in terms of noise and cabin temperature.

I have the 130 engine and its quick enough.

Any other specific questions, let me know.

Fullback=L200...so, are they really trading cheaper than the L200?

Had a drive in a Despatch today. Very impressed.

Apparently April one the Crew Van will be available in alternative Spec / Engine, rather than the basic. I can't wait, but have found one specced out....

Transit drive tomorrow..... I've read that the bench is really uncomfortable, so it looks like a Sport to get individual passenger seats.

You can spec the Vito with a bulk head behind the crew seats and it automatically deletes the trim from the bulkhead back. That is how I speced mine because I wanted clear seperation from Passenger to Stuff.

It seems to be quite an unusual spec for Merc and I have only ever seen one in a dealers but it was a customer order.

Picked it up late March and love it, 14K so far and the engine is improving all the time. I speced it high, because it is a family wagon to, but got a good deal from the dealer with discounts from them and Merc direct which made it worth using thier finance.

Dont go to the car dealer side of Merc, seek out a dedicated commercial dealer and they are far more helpful, knowledgable and willing to do a deal.

If you are local to me (Beds/Bucks/Herts) then you're welcome to look at mine.
