I was going to get Internet radio but instead linking Alexa into my current system with tunein skill works well and all voice activated.

You can listen to BBC radio on the website across the world.

BBC have an app, or tuneinradio of you want other stations as well.

I'm also interested in a 'stand alone' internet radio. I don't want to use my phone or tablet. Anyone got any recommendations?

Why not get a cheapie tablet and just call it your internet radio?!

Only ask as I've been using tunein for years on phone/tablet/laptop - it works great! With table if you need more oomph you can blow a wad on Sonos (we did and love it, btw,....just saying it isn't cheap!),or plug in a cheap speaker.....

Added to which - you are talking *internet* radio - you will almost certainly be using an app to set it up (like the unit linked above!) - no great shakes in moving from there to using the app to control it, surely!

Roberts Stream 93i. Had one of these for a few months now. It is feature packed and has a very good sound quality, as do all Roberts Radios. I mainly use it to listen to BBC Radio 6 music in the evenings.

Like you I specifically wanted a standalone radio that looks like a radio. Plenty will tell you that you don't need one because you can listen to Internet radio on your phone your pc or your tablet all of which are totally impractical for my requirements. I Can't stand having to keep plugging things in and out rebooting and recharging all the time so the Roberts 93i suits me fine. It sits on the bedside table full time, one press of a button and its playing music with no messing about! Recommended.

Many thanks, that sounds exactly what I'm looking for. I too want one as a bedside radio and I don't keep my phone or tablet in my bedroom as they keep disturbing me binging and bonging with new messages etc.

Thanks again!

Just passing through, but I have a 93i, and yes it's a very good sounding piece of kit. Definitely recommended.

You can turn that off you know. You can even tell the device to turn that off for you between certain times of the day.

I bought an Echo mainly to listen to music while living abroad. TuneIn gives me all the digital radio stations for free, and for £3.99/month I can have the entire Amazon Music catalogue available as well.
Also useful for alarms, timers, weather forecast, news bulletins, etc

FWIW, the Roberts stream 93i has won What HiFi "radio product of the year/best buy/etc" for the last 4 years.

Don't own one myself, but have had a listen in various stores & they do sound good for a portable box. FYI OP: I know you said you wanted Internet Radio, so not sure if it's a factor but if you were looking at DAB too, I believe France/Europe uses a different/incompatible version. Could be wrong. it has been known...

Incidentally, for those who prefer quality over quantity, as far as I know, internet radio currently offers bar far the best audio quality.

DAB that uses MP2 with its poor error correction, and low bit rate of 128kb/s (for BBC R6), and is frankly rubbish in my opinion, the bit rate is a bit higher at 160kb/s on Freesat and Freeview, and on the internet the bit rate jumps to 320kb/s and uses the far better AAC audio codec. Certainly good enough not to disgrace itself when connected to a decent hifi.

I just hope that the beeb keep it that way, and the marketing managers don't get their way and crowbar the bit rate down so that thousands more stations can be squeezed in (hardly any of which I will ever listen to) in the name of choice.

DAB+ uses a far better codec and is in extensive use in Europe, but for some reason take up by radio stations in the UK has been low.

eta: the steam 93i is both DAB and DAB+ capable.
