Can anyone make any suggestions for stocks that might perform in the event of an icy cool wind blowing in the UKs direction in the next few years. I seem to remember dominos pizza and listed pawnbrokers did particularly well in the last recession.

Traditionally pharma has always done well in a recession. I guess if you think sterling depreciates too, and it is a UK rather than a global recession, then the big miners (rio, bhp) would do well, or something like blackrock world mining (not an IT for the faint hearted)

Thanks, I suppose I am really thinking that the UK more than anywhere is likely to suffer over the next few years. I think the pound will continue to hurt but buying large cap FTSE as a currency play seems to have limited upside now. The question I am grappling with is whether it makes more sense to shift a greater % of portfolio into cash, or try and find some things that will perform in a UK specific downturn (like Begbies). Pharma actually feels a bit like a proxy for cash to me.

Depending on your morale compass, "sin" stocks have tended (imo) to also do well in a down turn - alcohol & tobacco providers namely.
