VW - sourcing a used car - can it be done?
Discussion
Afternoon Amigos,
Looking for a car from VW dealership in January, know exactly what I want and would be buying it outright as an approved used car.
Only trouble is, the particular model appears to be a little thin on the ground at present!
Anyone know if a dealer will source a car for me if I paid deposit up front? Someone mentioned to me they have a massive network and can pretty much get anything. Will be a quick easy sale for my local vw and saves me searching/travelling to get one!
Cheers

I wanted a quite a specific car from VW. I went to the local dealer down the road, they checked their system and had one which pretty much met my exact requirements at a dealership 50 odd miles away, within their group.
I did a deal and paid the deposit. Car came down, we agreed a few things to be done, then I collected it. Nice and easy!
I feel it was definitely worth getting it through them, as it went back a few times under warranty so nice to be familiar.
(was a mk7 gti, had to have performance pack and few other things)

Sounds good! I'll call the salesman I brought my Golf R from and tell him to get me a polo GTI for under 14k
I don't rate the dealership AT ALL for warranty work but I know Drift Bridge will have an ex-demo coming into stock around December 20th. It's silver with a few options. Cant remember what they said it would be priced at.

Nothing too special, a 2015 polo gti, dsg, white, that is all I ask!
Then there are 3 on Autotrader around the £15K mark and you can even choose 3dr or 5dr.
The one in the dealer network is HERE (backup autotrader link for the same car here)
Although it is over your 14K budget (which I suspect is your sticking point with the dealer).

£14k is perhaps pushing it for a DSG (certainly without a bit of negotiation). Cheaper cars do come up but they tend to go quite quickly.
Do you definitely want a DSG? I didn't like it in the Polo. Much preferred the manual.
Well worth calling a few nearby dealers in different groups and getting your name down. Now is certainly a good time to buy.

Conversely though, if there arent any available, they're not going to be able to source it?Looking for a car from VW dealership in January, know exactly what I want and would be buying it outright as an approved used car.

I bought my 2016 Passat earlier in the year off a spreadsheet in a VW franchised dealers and then it was shipped to the dealers.
I'd be checking the dealer network from volkswagen.co.uk and seeing who has what where. Ultimately if they're going to have to buy it off another dealer you're going to have to pay a premium otherwise.

IME, the fact you are prepared to put your money where your mouth is with a deposit means you should be taken seriously and whilst it is indeed a rare car, it is also an easy deal (as you say) for a salesman if they find one!
Why would they bother though? They're tasked with selling whats on the forecourt / network, rather than wasting(?) time looking for what might be a non existent car?daemon said:

They're tasked with selling as many cars as possible at the end of the day and it would not be a waste of time if they find such a car, infact it would take probably just as long to scan the trade car auction websites etc as it would to demo a new customer on one of their stock cars.If they spend the 60 seconds I just did looking for a white Polo GTi DSG on BCAs website they would find 3! a 2012, a 14/63 and a 15/65....
Easy deal for someone!
ETA - although having now spent more than 60 seconds on BCA, one is fitted with some aftermarket wheels, one is 81k miles and one is actually a manual - but you get my point (possibly)........

Its a unit to them. Why go to all that trouble when they've already got a pipeline of used cars coming anyway.

It wont be up to a car salesman "out on the floor" to be sourcing cars. Then theres the inspecting, prep, etc of the car and the "hope" that once they've done all that the O/P actually buys it.

Yeah, I guess it depends on the individual business but having just come out of retail (admittedly as an SM), when a salesman came to me with a customer ready to buy a car if we can just find it I was all over it - though you have to be clear with the customer that once the car is bought, they are only not going ahead with it if something is badly amiss when the car arrives. Its a unit to them. If you're paying a deposit up front then definitely! I bought a Range Rover Sport yesterday for a chap who left me £2500 and list of what he does and doesn't want.
VW have a massive list of cars being defleeted which is updated weekly. The only thing I found when I worked main dealer was the Performance cars tended to be quite expensive as they usually came from head office which meant they have usually done sub 3/4k miles and were loaded up with options whereas a Passat SE 2.0tdi would be very cheap as they're coming off daily rentals which means 10-20 identical cars being added each week.
