Just rang up the council...I'm on the housing list & have been for over 4 years now without having recieved an offer!!
I'm currently on 92 points and acruing 2 every month...1 room bedsits are being given to applicants on 100 points or over!!
Now I live in Basildon & there are plenty of flats on the council near where I am & they have just built a block of brand new 1 & 2 bed places 3 roads over from where I am.
So i enquired as to wether I may be considered for one of these nice new ones when they are finished...their reply??
"No sorry these have been built to house Asylum seekers" WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently she went on to say that they have had 290 new Asylum Seeker Applications that have been jumped to the top of our housing queue!!!
How the hell can they do this?
There are decent hardworking people (i.e. me) out there who cant get on the property ladder because everything is priced way out of our range so the council housing scheme is the only way we can fly the nest so to speak, and now I'm being told I cant actually get a place beacuse they have to house 290 Asylum Seekers who will no doubt pay nothing to live there & sponge off more of our taxes.
I also was told that if I joined the housing list now as a single applicant with no ties i.e. no pregenant girlfriend or crack habit & in need of secure housing it will take 10 years to get a flat!!
How much of a joke is this?

Had asylum/immigration on Question Time last night, and although I only had one eye/ear on it, I don't believe anyone brought up what is the biggest p1ss take to me; the fact that so many of the barstewards come through safe countries before coming here. How the f
k can they claim asylum here if they have passed through numerous countries which, if they are honestly fleeing persecution, would have offered them safe haven? Because we're the softest touch in the developed world, that why!

Although I agree with your sentiment I think they come here 'cos a lot can speak English rather than French Italian or German.

That and the free housing, driving lessons, and large handouts..

That's what I plan to do - my family will become an immigrants in another country! However, I will be adding to that particular economy and not taking from it.
It will be sad if all the decent people leave strebbe-I still think Britain can be redeemed.

Without going back on the ID card debate, you will find that the Uk is one of the only country without a legal requirement to carry ID papers with you.
This means that in France or Germany, an illegal immigrant can be stopped for an ID check at any time in the street in theory.
Without this requirement, an illegal has a much more comfortable and easy ride to go about in society.
I know most people are against ID cards here, but this fact is often a big attraction to illegal immigrants on a day to day basis.

Like thats going to help the Conservative Party will if in Government will have to obey international law as well.
So Asylum seekers will still be coming into the country and need housing.
Only solution is to build more social housing and to relax planning law to allow more private housing to come onto the market.

I wouldn't disagree that it is probably an additional factor. I haven't meant anyone who has vemently disagreed with my suggestion that Govt. policy should be 'If you come through a safe country, we will send you straight back to your country of origin. Do not pass go, do not collect your £200'.
