Right guys I fancy pie and mash for dinner.

Who does the best pies in shops. Don't have time to make one sadly.

Steak and ale or something along that line.

I have most supermarkets around. Is it worth getting a pieminster over a pukka or are some of the shops own brands good ?

Thanks

The best supermarket pies I`ve found are Charlie Bighams, steak and ale, top crust flaky pastry, little ceramic pie dish. Usually around £7 for two.

If you are near Reading and can get in to the town centre, then Sweeny & Todd.

Anywhere near Lochinver? The local pie shop is brilliant and it's a fantastic drive/sail to get there. They do send them anywhere through their Piesbypost website.

Smiler.

I have seen these mentioned a lot on various Scottish hill walking pages. Meant to be awesome going to get up there walking next year that will be a highlight I think.

I noticed this morning that the Coop at the end of our road has Pukka pies on sale for a quid at the moment.

I also noticed that whilst "beef" was the highest percentage ingredient in the steak version, it was closely followed by water and margarine. yuck

Aldi.

Rooster potatoes for the mash and one of Aldi's 'posh' pies. More than matches any of the over-priced brands mentioned above^^.

Spend what you save on a couple of nice bottles of beer.

So the ingredients are - Beef (29%), Wheat Flour (contains: Wheat Flour, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin, Thiamine), Water, Margarine (contains: Palm & Rapeseed Fats & Oils, Water, Salt), Onions, Modified Maize Starch, Beef Stock, Salt, Wheat Protein, Caramelised Sugar Powder, Pepper, Butter (contains: Milk), Beef from EU approved suppliers (UK & abroad)

Now I wonder what flour, water and margarine could be used to make in a cheap pie? scratchchin what were you expecting to make a pastry case on a £1 retail price pie?

Well quite. Some economies are worth making, but buying anything with pastry made with margarine will always be an economy too far.

All the cheap chippy pies are the same. Holland’s pies are Margarine based too.
