Narwahl ribs - Any good?
Discussion
Fancy a rib for playing on the rivers near us and very occasionally on the Solent or Devon estuary.
Can't seem to find much either way on Narwahl and valiant ribs.
Few of each on sale on fleabay in budget (£6k ) but the Narwahl doesn't seem to sell .
Is there something I don't know about them or is it simply overpriced hence unable to sell.£3895
( 5.8m . Red tube , 2 stroke yam 75 and retubed in 2011)
Cheers darren

IIRC Narwhal used to have PVC tubes and be a bit crap, but that one has been redone in Hypalon which depending on who has done the job is a worthwhile upgrade. 3 cyc Yams are normally pretty bullet proof, but it's old and could be a bag of spanners - unlikely to be worth the £1800 he's got it listed for separately tbh, although an engineer would be able to give a reliable report easily enough on those things as they're billy basic.
Jockey seat looks fubared so budget for a new cushion and check bearings on trailer. Personally, if the trailer and RIB is as described and you're keen, I'd offer him £3895 less the £1800 he reckons his engine is worth and put some extra money into a 2nd hand, warranted outboard fitted by a decent dealer. Should easily be able to get a newer 75/90 for circa £3k fitted.
Worth checking at rib.net, for ribs for sale, advice on Narwhal and other options. Like PH, there's the odd t
t, but generally a helpful bunch. Haven't checked the detail, but looks like there's a Narwhal in the classifieds for sale on there.

The Narwhals were imported into the UK by the same people as Valiants, prior to them doing Narwhal. Tube technology has come on leaps and bounds and while both Valiant and Narwhal may have used PVC, the difference is massive between the two. Hypalon isn't all it is cracked up to be, as again fabrics have moved on since then. The current range of Valiant RIBs are not the same boats they were 8 or so years ago. Sadly they sold to a much larger company who ditched the original boat designs in favour of attempting to make more money using some re-badged Italian boats. The owner of Valiant (as was) has now set up a new company selling Vanguard RIBs, which (surprise surprise) are virtually the same as the original Valiants.
Engine wise, the old two strokes are pretty good. I wouldn't be put off by higher hours (not that hours on engines of that age can be proven) and would ask someone to do compression tests and check the engine is pumping water round.
