My knob has a nice threaded collar underneath the ball.
You can either screw your ball down onto the collar, or screw the collar up onto your ball.
You will need to juggle it a bit to make sure that your ball is straight.
In fact, there is so much thread available that you can keep screwing until your ball almost comes off in your hand.
Make sure you stop just in time and then tighten the collar.
This makes your knob about an inch longer, giving you that vital extra leverage, which is especially useful if it is a bit stiff.

Laughing till you cry in the office apparently draws attention to yourself :-(
I also have a knob problem.
I unscrewed mine to clean the gaitor and when I screwed it back on the numbers are upside down.
I have tried many times to unscrew it carefully and feel the click, indicating that it will bite the other side of the thread, but get the same result each time.
It's shocking having one forward gear and five reverse!

The collar is also threaded and can be screwed up and down on the lever.
The ball should be screwed onto the lever to the desired position, with the inscription on top of the ball the right way up.
The locking collar should then be screwed anticlockwise until it meets the bottom of the ball and locks it in position.
If you do not have a locking collar, then it is simple enough to use an appropriate nut in its place.
You may find that your collar is too far down your shaft and needs to be screwed anticlockwise until it is tight up against your ball.
