Work are having a Christmas party with the invitation stating formal, black tie welcome.

Now I am planning to attend wearing my best black tie, however, through the grapevine and subsequent work communications it seems the dress code has been relaxed to no blue denim!

Any reasons I shouldn't stick with Plan A just because the others will inevitably put their best black jeans and converse on?

You'll look an over dressed c**t?....

Serious answer no. But maybe black suit dress shirt and smart black tie....

You'll be far from the worst dressed it'll be the guy from Ops in the faux velvet maroon DJ from next 60 quid extra skinny fit.

What are you most comfortable with?

That's the answer to the question.

Thanks, you have helped to make up my mind.

Black tie it is.

I have no problem being the only one who can maintain standards

I would only wear black tie if the invitation was explicit that this was the only option.

Obviously I don't hob knob with the likes of the Bullingdon set.

Plenty of the women will have worn the female equivalent of "black tie" so you wont be out of place. You could go with a coloured tie if you wanted to relax a bit, especially if your whole team follow suit.

Just wear a black tie, nothing else and see what they say on the door.

Probably something like:
"Cold outside is it?"

This seems to be a growing trend.

Our Christmas party has also been downgraded to smart casual, i don't think i'll bother going.

This being PistonHeads, I feel obliged to point out that they wear a variant of white tiesmile.

I went to a 30th under similar circumstances and wore a dinner jacket; mostly because the birthday girl likes formal wear and hired a venue, and a band etc. By all accounts I looked the business (of course these things are relative...). I therefore suggest you confidently wear black tie - you will look like you own the place.
