Had another meat delivery from Campbells Meat and with it came some vouchers for various wine clubs - Naked Wines, Virgin Wines and 31 Dover.

Are any of these online wine sellers worth bothering with? My tastes aren't particularly sophisticated so there's very little wine snobbery to worry about.

I spent the past 15-odd years not drinking for medical reasons (alcohol gave me migraines), but now find myself able to (whether I should or not is a different matter hehe ) and am very much enjoying having the odd glass or two of an evening and this looks an interesting way to try different wines without having to wander the aisles of the supermarket.

Thoughts?

you will get better and cheaper wines from Aldi and free delivery too as well. The wines clubs are just there to get rid of stock at higher prices.

Naked wines = paying over the odds for ordinary wine.

Better wine to be had for less money at Asda.

Imho.

Watch out for Virgin wines, they sign you up to a "wine bank", I pay £15 a month. Unless something really good comes up I don't buy from them, so much so I now have £200 in the "wine bank". It will get spent this side of xmas but I've not seen anything worth buying yet.

Best deals at the moment are supermarkets, asda has generic wines at 6 for £25 and a few decent wines nearly half price.

As already mentioned, best selection seems to be the wine society.

Wine society are good but I still prefer going to Majestic rather than buying online

We get so many discount vouchers for them, we never pay more than 80% of the shelf price and buy in multiples of 6 as well at which point it is pretty good value.

I've had a few deliveries from Naked Wines, I've not been that impressed. As said above, Better and cheaper wine can be had from Aldi.

Must say I've been buying from Virgin for a couple of years and every bottle has been ace. I just phone them, plead dumb and they recommend what they think is good and what I'll like, I then order two.three of each and if I don't like one, not happened yet, they'll replace both the opened and the unopened one.

Ordered a mixed case of 4 different red wines making up 12 bottle case Thurs evening, delivered yesterday at 09:00. Got £50 off the case so £75 delivered. So far we're on bottle two and no complaints.

Been using Naked Wines for about 3 years. Decent choice and very good customer service.

The wines are from smaller producers. I tend to frink Spanish and Portuguese wines and can’t complain at the quality

Majestic wines seconded.

I have finally learnt there is a world of difference between 5 quid and 8 quid wine!

Virgin wines add 25% to your wine bank every 4 months, I think?

Something like that. They just added another £10 to mine to use within 24 hours but there's nothing worth buying at the moment.

This. It's definitively not supermarket tat being sold cheap - I have almost universally ordered from small batch producers, who you can talk direct with via the app/website. The wine is pretty good, and fine value - if anything, it might be criticised for a lack of variety, but not a lack of quality.

Majestic are excellent.

I've had some very good wines from Virgin Wines.

Tried Laithwaites too, but the wines were not as good for the money as Virgin.

Can you suggest some fairly heavy reds?

I get the impression Virgin wines are generally bulk buy and not brilliant value. If there are a few stars in there I'll have a few cases.
