Abarth 500 esseesse Record Monza Exhaust
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm currently running my OH's abarth 500, I've noticed the exhaust is rattling a little and I suspect it's a mount/hanger.
I've contacted the local abarth dealer who say they cannot source replacements even after enquiries with Italy.
I find this odd but thought I'd just try and source something online but I don't really know what I'm looking for and Google on this occasion has brought back nothing of use.
Can anyone offer any guidance?
Thanks

First, check that the exhaust isn't making contact with any of the under car heat shields...even down at the mid section. Replace or adjust hangers if this is the case.
The bypass valve spring can rattle so worth check it opens and closes properly...
The back box can rattle when the outer skins corrodes and resonates at varying engine speeds.
The OEM Monza is unfortunately an expensive poor quality product. A stainless alternative is available but 'aint cheap - https://www.tmcmotorsport.com/product/4861
IIRC, as the Monza was a dealer fit addition(with other specific trim gubbins) - the cars were fitted with standard double exhausts for type approval - the exhaust was excluded from the standard vehicle warranty. eBay currently has plenty of Monzas on offer from dealers or otherwise. Personally I would ditch it for something more substantial and that is likely to last.

It is indeed a pretty substandard bit of kit. I too had a similar rattle.
Good dose of wd40 on the valves in the pipes plus a few runs around 6000rpm to get the valves opening/closing seems to have resolved the issue on mine.
I can only put it down to the spring preventing it opening fully and resonating.
However, poor quality aside, if you do have a good look at it the hangar brackets don’t always line up properly. Again, a relatively painless fix in that I found a little bit of brute force centering up the box to the brackets stopped it rattling as much.

I was intending to do just the same with some wd40 this weekend. Though, what is the symptom of it not working? Ours is very loud all the time, and all 4 pipes are always open, but to be honest, i dont mind that.Good dose of wd40 on the valves in the pipes plus a few runs around 6000rpm to get the valves opening/closing seems to have resolved the issue on mine.

I will also have a proper look at the exhaust at weekend too, get to the bottom of it.
The four pipes shouldn’t be open all the time. That may be the cause of your rattle. The valve in two of the pipes (one each side) should only open under certain circumstances (floor it/high revs/combination of both, or in the reverse circumstances when coming down from high revs/off the throttle.)
The spring isn’t very robust and can come loose, stick, or come detached. Not the easiest thing to get at either. A consequence of not very good build quality I’m afraid!
Certainly at odds with the rest of the car which is pretty well screwed together.
