I should probably preface this with the fact I understand fun is subjective and unlikely to be achieved here. But it needs to be something that isn’t totally dull to the core to press on in.

After hunting for months for a reasonably interesting tow car and finding that in the form of a 480hp B8.5 S4, my usage profile has changed and I now find myself heading for north of 20k miles a year, where 20-25mpg just isn’t going to cut it.

Budget is 10-20k, needs to be able to tow a minimum of 1800kg, but preferable 2000+ and needs to have a decent max. ball weight (80kg is manageable, closer to 100 the better).

I’m looking for 40mpg+ at motorway speeds.

So far I have a shortlist of various diesel cars - Octavia vRS, 335d, 535d, A4/A6 Avant. I like the look of th of XF Sportbrake but reliability stories put me off.

535d seems to tick the most boxes so far, but I figure it’s worth asking for suggestions.

The Jaguar is as reliable as most 535d's have their fare share of problems I'd say also include the Mercedes C/E Class in your short list but I'd test drive the Jag.
