Top 2 are straight from the camera, bottom one I have added a bit of contrast (can't do any more in work)

I like no. 2 - striking composition and strange pinkish colour.

Is Venice that nice in person, all the pictures I see of it tend to lead me to believe it's a dirty, grotty affair which relies on it's name and quirky nature of using boats nowadays.

Then again, I know very little about it...

edit:: what spelling mistake?

Venice is a very nice place. Went a few years ago whilst touring Italy. Capri is also very very nice

You should photoshop the cranes out of the last one

Venice is OK, but always crammed with tourists and frankly unpleasant in the height of summer. Full of pigeons (and thus guano) too. Worth a visit though (out of season).

Northern Italy has sooooo many much more worthy places to visit than Venice.

Capri is also rammed with tourists. Beautiful island, but too full. Not really a lover of Southern Italy (unlike Italy north of Rome which is awesome).

This time of year Venice is really nice. Not too many tourists etc. There are occasional smells, but they are rare.

It is expensive though. Gondola rides started at €100. A bit of haggling and you can get them below €50.
Coffee outside at Rialto Bridge was €4 + €2 min service charge. Compare this to €0.90 on the mainland!
€10.50 gets you public transport for 24hrs. Good value and it means you can visit surrounding suburbs (islands), such as Murano:

Nice and peaceful compared to Venice.

Venice is beautiful, but really rather dirty and it absolutely stinks in summer. Go in winter - it's quieter and less smelly.

There are wonderful places to visit all over Italy - pick a town and you virtually can't lose... almost everywhere has great architecture.

Im off there in a couple of weeks. Any suggestions as to where me and my wife can stay. We want somewhere clean central and not too expensive.
Also not sure what photographic kit to take. Obviously the 20D but which lenses?

We ended up staying outside Venice in a place called Metre. It's a 30 min bus ride away. I wasn't happy with the Travel Agent we booked with, but in the end it worked out well as food etc was much cheaper than in Venice itself. I would not recommend the hotel we were at though. Hotel Ariston.

I went with a 28-300mm (borrowed from Jessops).
