2nd hand Ergonomic Office Chairs

Looking to spend a fair amount on a good chair instead of the rubbish that we are provided at work. Looking at something like the Herman Miller Aeron or similiar

Can you anyone recommend a good place for picking up these second hand in good condition as I can't face parting with the best part of a grand for one

Are Herman Miller still seen as the chairs to go for? Or are there others out there now just as good for protecting your back while also not destroying your wallet?

Whilst I'm partial to certain second hand items I do think a second hand chair is a bit nasty. Suppose it's not too different to a car seat except total usage hours is probably higher.

I picked up a Humanscale Liberty chair a few years ago for about £165, have an on/off bad back and can't praise it enough. It never makes it worse, is OK to sit in when my back is otherwise crippling me, hard wearing... one wheel cracked and I rang Humanscale to see if I could buy a spare to repair it myself... they sent a guy round who did the repair free of charge, fitting an entirely new base. Not bad for a second hand item!!

I used to sell office chairs including Herman MillerAero, they were very nice chairs indeed. I had the choice of any chair I wanted for my desk, and I chose the Aero. You can pick them up on eBay sometimes.

Therapod were another good chair, based on a truck drivers seat with inflatable back support. I used to sell loads of them to employees with a doctors note for a bad back. I became a bit of a Therapod legend in the local industry for this. I'd always be getting phone calls from employees who I had been recommended to. They kind of sold themselves.

But try before you buy as chairs are a personal thing.

I got an Aeron earlier in the year on eBay. I looked out for one that had led a sheltered occasional use home office life.

I'm out and about in various offices all over the place for work and I've not come across a more comfortable desk chair yet.

They come in three sizes too, worth bearing in mind.

I paid £80 for my Steelcase Please 2 to replace an original Please that also came off eBay.

Both came out of home offices and hadn't had a great deal of use.

I didn't get on with the Herman Miller chairs.

If I was buying today I'd be looking for a Steelcase Gesture. They look superb.

It's so worth doing. My Please 2 is fantastically comfortable for long periods of time.

The ones from 2ndhnd are completely refurbished, they're like new.

I suffer with my back and I probably spend more time in my office chair than any one other single place (probably including my bed). I work from home so spend all day sat in it and then inevitably spend a couple of hours of an evening in it on the computer watching youtube, browsing PH or whatever. So it's quite important.

I actually had one of those wacky racing car office seats and loved it. But I'm convinced it's what did for my back as it tilts you back (like you're sat in a car) and then you crane forward to the keyboard. Terrible posture!

I have a Herman Miller Aeron now.

Neither could I until I sat in my chair at my new job. Most comfortable chair I ever have sat in.

I got an email 3 months later about Aeron miller chairs and realise thats what I have. Best grand my company ever spent.

Well I'm prone to an impulse buy and just picked up a Steelcase Leap V2 off ebay for £180. It's from a chap who only uses it at home so looks in good condition and he works nearby so easy collection. They're going for £320 on 2NDHND so it should be fairly easy to sell on if it doesn't suit me

I picked up a Humanscale Freedom chair from Ebay for a third of retail price, Its replaced a Aeron and imo is a much better chair I can do a 12-14hr stint with no back or butt pain.

To be fair they only really come into their own once they are properly adjusted to suit you.

There are also lots of imitations of that chair.
