Got a NIP for speeding on a motorway. Nothing major - £100 and 3 points job. Annoying as only doing 80 odd on sunny day with no traffic, but can't deny it.

However, the NIP states the M5, Strensham, Afganistan.

Im not going to ignore it as it is a clerical error and if it goes to court the Maj will still expect me to pay and take points. However, whats the best way to proceed?

By not ignoring it, and treating it as a clerical error.

Return the form, with a note to highlight the error. ?

And if they can't get the location correct how reliable is the speed recording? Muppets.

I'm guessing they're claiming that because by the time they send you the correct one, they'll be out of time. What's the legal position on this one, IANAL of course?

Its nuts that someone can actually print this.

Re the time limits, my understanding is they would correctly issue a new notice. This would now be more than 28 days after the alleged offence as original offence alleged was end of October.

Yes, because it’s such an impossible mistake to make. After all, it’s not like pick lists on computer systems have UK / Britain at the top of the list, then the rest alphabetically. Hardly a disaster and there is no way you’re getting away with it.

However, if you’d like to try, please keep us informed, of the extra points, fine and victim surcharge that you receive after going to court to use this as a defence.

The location named on the NIP has to be precise, if not then its not valid and they have 14 days to get an NIP out.

Quite how they got Afghanistan onto the NIP though I don't know, sure its not a windup.

Exactly I have seen pick lists like that, Displaying UK by default but inadvertently click & you can end up selecting top of the alphabetical list of countries.

Easy. They just pressed the down arrow 1 or 2 times more than usual.

Surely they have all the locations they use pre-loaded into the database for maximum efficiency.

Whats your take on the incorrect location.

De minimis -something to do with trifles - applies to things like names spelled slightly incorrect or a yellow line being 2mm too thin, is accusing someone of being in Afghanistan when they meant England a trifle?

I'm one of the tiny number of people who don't seem to come here spoiling for a fight. However, I'm not sure I've ever encountered someone so obviously crippled by Dunning-Kruger as you.
At first I assumed you were on the wind-up, which is fine in a #Bregzit thread, but giving out duff advice in matters such a this really isn't cricket.

OP, you'd do well to take advice from the barrister above and not from the chap I have quoted.

For my tuppence, you're not getting away with this, so deal with it as swiftly and painlessly as possible to make it go away.
