Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of the VW Up!/Citigo/Mii trio with the ASG semi auto gearbox. Reason being it's on the list for replacement for our Swift due to the decent finance offers from our local dealer on a Beats spec car and the space is decent for such a small car. However it has to be auto as my partner only has an auto licence and I've seen some quite shocking reviews in the ASG on motoring magazines but this only tells half the story I feel.

The Swift is a torque converter (11 plate 1.5 petrol) and the only semi auto experience I have was of a friend's God awful Corsa Easytronic and the Polo DSG we test drove earlier in the year.

Of course it would be wise to test drive one but I'm keen to hear if anyone's tried one before this gets arranged.

Regards

Pretty sure if you hate the Corsa then you will hate the UP, the swift is one of the best small cars with a proper automatic gearbox. We couldn't find one locally to test when we were looking but did manage to find a Fiat 500 dualogic and it wasn't very nice.

I test drove a Citigo (same car) with the auto. It was crap - jerky, slow and odd timed changes. Probably the worst auto box currently on sale. The sales guy called it the Noddy box.

Thanks guys,

Kind of confirms what I initially feared - sounds like it's probably not the best. Seems a shame that there's a shortage of proper autos in small cars. The Kia Picanto has a proper auto gearbox and is also on the shortlist as is the Suzuki Baleno and new shape Swift but these are more expensive as you can only get auto in the top spec models. Test drove a Baleno and it's very good but preferred the funky looks of the Up. I personally would have chosen an i10 Premium SE but my partner hates them. Beyond that we've test driven a Polo DSG (a run out current shape could be an option actually) and I have a Fabia so we don't want two.

The Ignis, Aygo trio and Viva are all semi autos, so is the Peugeot 208. Fiesta Ecoboost Powershifts are good value pre reg but the OH doesn't like Fords.

Everything else is ridiculous money for a small car; we will probably have to delve into the second hand market a bit deeper to be honest.

Mazda2 has a proper auto box, but more expensive than the Suzuki's.

Our shotlist when looking for a small auto was Fiesta, i10 and Swift. In the end a n Audi A4 auto came in as PX so i paid the trade in price, thats going to be replaced by a CRV or Freelander while we tidy up the house as the seats don't fold in the A4, then that will be replaced with a Mini

Ironically I keep coming back to the Mini; too expensive new but been looking at used examples around 3 or 4 years old with some of the TLC pack left. We're trying to avoid buying an older car on finance if we can as we don't want to be in a position 3/4 years down the line where we're still paying off a car worth buttons as the car will do about 12k a year so would want something that holds it value hence why the Up was so appealing on paper. I've been drawn to brand new leases/PCPs up to now but the sheer shortage of decent new automatics in budget means going new might be out of the question.

I would be happy enough running the Swift into the ground but my partner's had it coming up 4 years now and wants something with more creature comforts and better on fuel as it only does about 34mpg.

The new shape smart fortwo or forfour has a proper dualclutch gearbox too.

Have a leased fortwo and i cant fault the gearbox. Nearly sure the same engine and drivetrains are used in the new renault twingos as well.

Now that's something I hadn't thought of, looks smart in all black. Twingo has already been ruled out but the Smart is a brilliant suggestion; thanks!

Twice the mpg, half the fun.

I had one as a hire car in September and thought it both very impressive and miserable to drive.
