Could do with an estate to put the dog in, but good on fuel and fun to drive.
Mondeo looks good but not sure which model to go for, anything else worth considering?

BMW 5 series touring 530/535d if you can find them, even the 525d is noticeably more rapid than the 520d. All the 6 cylinder diesels make a nice noise and my 525d returns about 600 miles on a tank.

It looks st in SE spec though hehe

Assuming you mean Swift rather than Fast, then look at the Octavia. The 170bhp diesel easily does 50mpg and is can be tuned/chipped close to 200 fairly easily, while the newer models come with more as standard. Petrol is a bit more power if economy's not your main driver. Bit smaller than the Mondeo though, the Superb is bigger if you need the size, and both are available in 4WD if that floats your boat.

There's a lot of love for the D5 Volvo's on here too.

W211 E320CDi. Mine does 40-45 mpg on a run and it doesn't hang around.
200,000 miles in and no serious problems yet, can't bring myself to part with it now as it's worth practically nothing.

The Mondeo is all of the above and my recommendation would be the newest, lowest mileage Titanium X Sport you can afford, with the petrol 200 bhp 2.0 ecoboost (note, the later 2.0, not the earlier Ollie Reed 2.5T) which comes with the powershift auto gearbox. While it's way worse on fuel than the diesel, they are significantly cheaper to buy and cheaper to service, so you make your savings in other ways. Two things stand out about the Mondeo - it's a fantastic drive and it's way cheaper than the equivalent "premium" badge/

If you can stretch the budget, the later 237 bhp facelift is worth seeking out.

Depends on what dog you have.
I fit two Great Danes in the back of a Golf R Estate, but have 2 of the 3 rear seats folded down.
I wouldn't recommend a Golf R for fuel economy though, I don't think I've seen much more than 20mpg since getting it.

The Petrols are all auto but with that comes the £300 fluid & filter change, the manual will incur an £600 DMF & Clutch change, both are good options.
