Ideas for Honeymoon
Discussion
I'm trying to sort out my honeymoon at the moment but am a bit stuck. We know that we definitely want to end up in the Maldives for the last week of complete laziness in a villa on stilts in the water. However, I'm having trouble coming up with something for the first 7-14 days that is slightly more cultural.
Have looked at Sri Lanka but there doesn't seem to be any top quality boutique hotels (we want something a little different). The Datai in Malaysia would have been good but MrsD doesn't want to go somewhere that some of her friends have already been. Therefore, that rules out the two handiest places to fly to the Maldives from.
Anyone any ideas?
Edited to add that it will be February which means the east coast of Malaysia isn't a goer either.

We've just returned from our Honeymoon and we spent the first part on Safari. It was quite simply stunning and by far the best part of the honeymoon.
Feel free to mail me if you want more details but having been, I would personally say that - if possible - a safari would be one thing that everyone should try at least once.
We followed that on with a week at a place similar to your Maldives bit - and the combination was just amazing.
Cheers,
Phil.

Same situation as you NickD, am looking at the Maldives to chill for a week but also something different for another 10 days of so (Won't meet you for a drink there mind you, will be off in October myself.....)
I am thinking myself of travelling along the way, ie 2 days in Dubai, 2 days in Singapore, and so on.
ChimKnee where did you go on your Safari ?
Thought about India - there seem to be some good safaris. One thing that put me off India (having never been before) is the sheer poverty you stumble across. Although obviously very humbling, its just not something that I'm keen on for my honeymoon.
I also thought about a safari (again, something I have never done) in South Africa as they seem to have a great selection of top class retreats mixed with a safari. I think there may be direct flights from South Africa to Maldives as well.
Hmmm, what to do?

My brother went to Goa in India.
He was at a beach resturant and requested calimari(spelling!!!) from the menu. The chap went into the sea and caught one and fried it in front of him. Talking about fresh or what. My brother was very impressed.
He did not impress the locals with his white bum when he strip to get an all over tan in a secluded spot though

Sabah, Malaysian part of Borneo.
I've heard that this is one of the best places in the world for Scuba diving if that's your thing...
Absolutely although since Jan 1st this year they have stopped anyone from staying overnight on Sipadan island so you have to stay on Mabul and do a fairly short boat trip everyday to get out there.
Sangalaki which is further south and off the Indonesian part of Borneo is also supposedly excellent although as yet i haven't visited.
