Just mulling over in my mind what makes a 'supercar' a supercar. In my mind its something fast, exotic, and something which you could pull up in outside a social occasion with other supercar owners and get a nod of approval. It's got to be a balance of the 3. I wouldn't say a base spec 996 would cut the mustard, but a GT3 RS certainly would. A 22B or Cosworth RS500 are certainly rare, fast and expensive (these days), but again not quite.

What would you say is the cheapest entry into this club?

Initial thoughts are an early R8 for £40-50k, maybe an early DB9 for similar money.

F456 may be in your price range, Modena slightly above it. Is the 997 turbo a supercar?

997 Turbo is a sportscar with supercar levels of performance. Might just be me but I just don’t see a 911 as a supercar.

I think you're right, it's just not special enough.

In terms of the OP's examples though, a Maserati is obviously more exotic than an Audi, and not really less super than a DB9.

I don't think the DB9 is a supercar, either.

I was about to say an R8 but I doubt you’d get a nod of approval from a 458 owner to your leggy 07 plate R8. Well, that’s what I think anyways.

On paper it is an R8, when I think of a super car I think of an exotic looking mid engined 2 seater but as for recognition from other super car owners I’m not so sure!

I had a look at R8’s and the cheapest one costs 4 grand more than my mums Toyota Rav4 hehe

Seriously though, 35 grand.......that won’t even get you an 320d M Sport :-o

Early Aston Martin Vantages fall into that price range.

Assuming you regard them as a supercar.
(I suspect this thread will turn into another debate about the semantics on the word)

What’s the purpose of comparing an 07 Audi R8 to a new BMW or your mums RAV4?

You might as well compare a cottage pie to a television.

Not sure it's a super car as it's too cheap?
But a F type will turn heads sounds great, quick enough to keep up with most super cars and not get frowned upon at car meets.

To me a supercar is the likes of Ferrari mclaren or Lamborghini

They need to be impractical noisy and turn heads and something you put on your bedroom wall

Cars like gtr Porsche Aston Audi are not supercars but sportscars in my opinion

I think it could be because it’s a bit too practical. A 911 can be used any day any weather and a lot of owners won’t bat an eyelid, the same can’t be said of a Gallardo/458/MP4-12

SuperCarDriver have already given this some thought and come up with a pretty decent list. Scroll down to current car for a drop down list, can’t be bothered copying it all out

My first thought would be an R8, too. The added bonuses being that it's easy to live with and really enjoyable to drive. In fact, I can't really see a downside.

So here we go (again) smile OP is asking for thoughts on an actual car to buy but the goal is flawed because there's no widely agreed definition of a supercar.

I think I own some but who knows, anyway for the money he could do well to look at a Noble M12 which are undervalued IMHO.

Nope all that says is you have some mighty big balls to afford the repair bills.

Classic Ferrari? I’m not talking that top gear challenge “supercar” it would still need to cost a few quid.

£35k.

500bhp V8 'Supercar'.

Surely the Ultima GTR is in with a shout of the cheapest entry.
