Having just got SP2 and hence WMP9, most videos just play as bright green with vague lines moving about. Anyone know what the problem might be?

Ta!

Video codecs, either uninstall any add-ons and reinstall or install the latest versions for WMP, DivX, Xvid etc...

Have a look under - right click My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager/Sound Video and Game controllers/Video Codecs/Properties - to see which ones you have.

I have 'Game Controllers', which is reporting a joystick although there isn't one connected, and 'Sounds and Audio Devices'. Nothing with video in it...

How odd, maybe SP2 has moved them (I'm playing safe and sticking to SP1) or possibly removed your Divx/Xvid...etc codecs. Did you have any installed before?

Is it a WMV or encoded Avi you are trying to play?

It was the clip here: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=171124&f=141&h=0

I'd hoped XP SP2 was clever enough to work out something that basic automatically...! SP1 was fine. Anyway, no major deal, I only use video to see fun clips like that.

http://x100.putfile.com/videos/d1-9410382217.wmv is the file

try downloading it and seeing - Windows shouldn't have an issue with the wmv file.

edit:: it's worth it, I still beaming at the clip

Solved - although I had the latest XP updates, I opened Media Player and checked from there - and a big bastard downloaded called Version 10. All works now
