Dashcam on Boxster?
Discussion
My wife has a 5 year old Boxster (981 variant is that?) and she has asked me to scout out a dashcam after several near misses. She wants something small and neat plus permanently wired in. I want it to be HD and give a good quality recording, hopefully in the dark too.
Looking at the interior mirror it is quite a wide stalk and I am presuming a cam will have to go either side of it.
So I’m wondering if any of you have a dashcam fitted to your Boxster and if so what make/type and where specifically you have it mounted?
With regards to hard wiring, is it easy or best done by a professional?
Thanks in advance.

First of all if the car is under OPC warranty hard wiring is a no no. To comply with the OPC rules my 997 uses the 12 v lead supplied to plug into 12 socket on centre console , the cable is easy to hide around screen and door seals leaving a fly lead to plug in when needed. My Polo has the camera hard wired. I bought the fitting kit from the camera manufactures ( £20 ish ) and it connects via a supplied piggy back fuse direct into a switched side fuse. I.e. The camera switches on/off when car started/stopped. A more satisfactory system but to be honest plugging in a fly lead works just the same. Hard wiring took me 30 minutes ( fuse box on Polo very handy placed under dash ) . Good luck with your choice. Ian

Thanks Ian, no longer under warranty so I guess it can be hard wired?steveatesh said:

Extremely easy to do (assuming its the same as my GT4).Looking at the interior mirror it is quite a wide stalk and I am presuming a cam will have to go either side of it.

I have a small dash cam directly behind the rear view mirror. The cabling can be pushed behind the roof lining and window A pillar all the way to the glove box where it can then just be plugged directly into a live 12v socket (assuming same as mine) without the need to hard wire.
All very easy to do, can be done in minute and looks very neat / hidden.

Can I suggest you take a look at the Mobius dashcam it has no fancy gizmos it's just a plain ultra reliable recorder with a +2hr battery life, it's about the size of a 9v battery and when installed very discrete.
I use them with power banks, this way the cameras can be left recording when the car is switched off.

Buy from here, this is the manufacturer and are great to deal with - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mobius-ActionCam-Lens-C...

I see it has been replaced by the Mobius 2, gets good reviews and yes a Parking mode looks available
Here's mine: http://www.caymanoc.com/forums/topic/562-dash-cam-...
Car 12v cuts out after 30 mins so that's all the parking cover I have. Anything more than that you're into battery supply and some kind of switchover, OR draining your battery with a permanent supply (warranty issue too). After researching this, I felt it too complex and dangerous in hot weather as the battery packs can become unstable.

Parking mode sorry I have no idea, I just leave mine recording when the car is parked up.
In my daily I have them hard wired and with a 64gb card fitted set on medium bit rate your looking at over 9hrs recording. (batteries removed capacitors fitted in my daily’s cameras)
The Mobius 2 is work in progress there are issues with it at this time, I would’t recommend it.
Of the reviews and screen shots I’ve seen A119v2 is a superb camera.
Also there is a new 4k camera with a similar design to the Mobius called the Gitup F1 it looks very interesting....but a bit more expensive than the Mobius.

Thanks for this, I went with your recommendation based purely on the size of the camera, its tiny and so it Mrs Steve user requirement I use them with power banks, this way the cameras can be left recording when the car is switched off.
Bought from Car camera Shop along with the capacitor and wiring kit, got a 32 Gb card from 7Day Shop though.

Nice one...they are excellent little cameras.
If you want play about with the settings here's a link to the set-up software - http://www.mytempfiles.info/mobius/index.html - the Mobius has the benefit of being able to be modified via this software the range of adjustments is huge.
If you need any help give me a shout.
