First off i fking hate christmas, so the only person i bother getting a present is my mother.
Everyone else is told not to bother with me, and i won't back smile

There is never an obvious present to buy her, as if she wants something she will buy it.

For the last few years i have just bought her a bouquet of expensive (~£60) flowers, as she likes flowers and gives her something to look after for a few weeks.

However is it wrong to keep doing the same every year?

Find something not so obvious? Those are the best ones.

Send her to a Spa, cooking lessons (careful with that one biggrin ) rather than something material if she buys things she wants send her to do something instead that she might not usually do. I find no one easy to buy presents for but it just takes a bit of forethought.

Similarly the in-laws get me a bottle of single malt whisky every year. Well happy with that!

I tend to buy my grandmother the same thing every year, as do most of us (her grandchildren) because she is 91 now, and she really enjoys a nice tin of biscuits, my sister always makes her a calendar every year with photos of us all in which she can enjoy.

I also have bought my parents the same present for the last 4 years now, recurring membership of the National Trust, because they get a great amount of us from it and so it is definitely worth it for them.

For years I've given my Dad two presents; 1) a Suduko block calendar from Waterstone and 2) a pair of socks from whereever I can find the "Brightest" pair from.

Every morning after breakfast he goes to the lounge and completes his daily Suduku with a coffee and every time we see him he makes a point of letting his trouser leg rise up showing us the latest pair of sock that we gave him and catches our eye and winks!

So, I'd say; yes it's fine to keep sending a relative the same present year after year after year!

We always used to get my Nan bath salts. Took us years to twig that she didn't have a bath and she was just being gracious when she opened the gift.

A chap I used to work with, a proper Yorkshireman, used to buy his mum her TV license every year. This continued once she became an OAP, and of course got it for free, he still gave her it as a present.

Other gifts included a wrapped up coal bucket, separate shovel and left and right gloves, all wrapped separately.

Nothing wrong with wrapping up a pair of gloves in two different packages, even use two different styles of paper if you can.

Sure it might be a bit "Colin Hunt" to some, but it is Christmas, and you are allowed to have fun. Its just something of a family joke that my mum would receive a 4-pack of blank VHS tapes ever year for Christmas, sometimes wrapped up individually, but always addressed "dear Mum, love from your children" - but written clearly in Dad's handwriting. Now of course that wasn't actually her Christmas present, but, it did keep the 4 of us children amused every year.

My in-laws did this. They aren't big drinkers and don't get whisky so they'd ask my wife what i wanted and she'd ask me.

Then a couple of years back i got five or six bottles from them. Not single malt but Bells, Teachers etc.

Apparently they thought buying me only one bottle looked a bit mean, when they could spend more or less the same and get me lots of bottles.

The result is that more or less anyone i know gets a bottle of Bells from me for even the most minor of special occasions.

I know this may come across as ungrateful.

I really want a bottle of Ailsa this Christmas and my 12 year old Bladnoch is running low.
