Need a new motor.

But don't know what to go for.

Rough criteria is as follows
- Sounds good
- 20mpg min thereabouts - maybe a little lower for the right motor
- Ideally RWD or AWD
- Petrol
-Budget up to £2k ish
- practical boot space
- comfy but handles ok

What's out there then?

Surely the stock answer for RWD has to be a 6 cylinder BMW E46 of some sort?

I bought a 325ti Compact 3 years ago and it comfortably manages the right side of 30 mpg - I've still got it as being a hatch the boot can get bigger if needed! laugh

Failing that the only other RWD option I can think of is some sort of C-Class but you'll struggle to find a manual one, if that matters.

AWD options must be an A4 Quattro, Golf VR6 or maybe a Subaru.

Can also get a 6-pot IS200 Lexus for rwd - sound nice but not rapid

As per abovesuggestion, the SOTW GOLF V6 4-motion featured on the front page must be worth considering

You could get a lot of RX8 for £2000.

Whether you want to depends on whether you understand the compromises they bring, and don't mind, and consider the engine itself to be a consumable item.

It's a real Marmite car. Many hate them; some people utterly love them.

Sorry, been busy, but back now.

As for likes and dislikes - tough question, but not really into German stuff or Japanese stuff, apart from a few models. RX8 and other screamers dont interest me.

Previous car history in order of ownership -
Ford Fiesta 1.3
Peugeot 306 HDi
Land Rover One Ten 200 Tdi
Vauxhall Omega 2.6 V6
Vauxhall Corsa 1.2
Volvo S60 D5
Mercedes E300 Estate
Volvo S60 T5
Audi A4 1.6 TDI Estate
Subaru Legacy Spec B
Fiat Panda Multijet
Ford Mondeo 2.0 Ghia

Some of what i have considered - a wide range!

Volvo T5 models - V70/S60 - but manuals without the horrid beige dash are rare.

Saab 95 Aero also considered, but manuals are again rare - and reliabilty concerns along with a dull drive sway me away.

Omega V6 - comfy barge that handles ok - but would rather a manual over auto, and maybe a little worn out now.

IS300 - dull unconnected drive, likes a drink, unfair to discount?

Citroen C6 - bargetastic - petrol rare, and overbudget, unreliable

Volvo 240 - with a V8. Would never have the time or money to complete a conversion

Jag XJS 3.6/4.0 - unreliabilty, rust and the fact id be getting a basket case puts me off

Jag XK8 - similar to above

Jag XJ8/XJR - similar to above

Subaru Legacy Spec B - the only scooby i'd have but had one already

Alfa 156 V6 - reliability concerns and getting rare

Cadillac Seville - dull drive, but V8?

Cadillac CTS - again, dull?

Chrysler 300C - image issues, reliabilty, dull?

Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland - V8, but getting on a bit now so reliabity concerns

Range Rover P38 - reliabity.

Range Rover L322 - reliability

So where do i go now?

2.8T Vectra grunt & a map away from 300bhp which could prove interesting.

CLK 430 not the most exciting but hey it's a V8 no reliability issues but you will need to look out for rust.
