The book is a pretty ploddy poorly written nerd fest with little going for it. And the movie seems to have discarded most of the 60s/70s/80s references in favour of 90s+ whilst using actors that don't really match their descriptions in the book. Can't see it being any good...

I liked the book, it wasn't brilliantly written but created a believable world. Spielberg might make it work, he's done films that have the right sort of ingredients, lets hope her can combine them together.

Gotta agree. It was a decent story hiding behind some really bad writing. Everyone fawns over it like it's a literary masterpiece though. Hopefully the film can smooth that over.

I read this wrong and assumed it was the BBC radio player!

Just saw a clip on facebook and it looks pretty good.

I found the book passably entertaining lightweight reading; the trailers look good, but it does appear that they are taking some liberties with the plot, which I suppose is to be expected.

What definitely isn't expected is the length of the lead character's right leg in the poster!

grumpy

I need to read the book again because I can't seem to relate what I remember of it to that trailer (except perhaps his container stack home blowing up)

I imagine even for a Spielberg movie the rights issues must have been pretty staggering. I’m hoping many of the references are being kept away from the trailers, I won’t be watching any more just in case as I think it’s a film that would work really well with little idea of what will be included.

As others have stated the book had an interesting premise and I found it enjoyable but them I'm a huge nerd and child of the 70's/80's so a lot of it clicked with me. It wasn't written very well though and it is VERY dependent on nerd pop culture so I can't see it having too much resonance with non nerd types unless they take huge liberties with the source material.

Spielberg has form with this type of film but I'm not convinced just yet.

The problem with 60's and 70s references is that unless you are an old fart like me they won’t mean any too you, so I can understand why they would go with the 90's onwards. You are less likely to alienate a large part of your potential audience

So 3D release today and full 2D release tomorrow. I've been on a self imposed podcast/website/social media ban since it premiered at SXSW as I've heard even early reviews on major sites were spoiling the various cameos and characters that appear outside of those already seen in the trailer.

I'm seeing it tomorrow night, can't wait. Only watched the first trailer so going in relatively cold, which is always a good thing.

Didn't know anything about this film but wandered into it with my 18 year old daughter.

I really enjoyed it and so did she. She even got the reference to a certain film better than me as it's been decades since I saw it.

It'd be lost on most young people.

Very Spielberg and a good romp.

Watched last night in IMAX. Visually stunning. Audio was so good too with all the 80's hits.
Movie itself... yeah ok, I loved it. Great humour, action, and the story is becoming more and more relevant.

I've ordered the book as I want to compare now. I would think I'd be going to see it again at the cinema soon too.

Yeah, I did find it ironic that whilst I was enjoying the film my 2 younger teenage boys are at home lost in PlayStation Live, only conversing with 'friends' thru headsets and hardly ever leaving their rooms.

Won't even go on holidays with me anymore and also keep bunking off school.

(I don't live with them btw)
