I need to replace the motherboard on my "reserve" PC. Anyone know where I can get hold of a motherboard that's suitable for a P3? I don't want to have to change the processor and memory so just a simple motherboard would do the trick. Trouble is, the shops only seem to sell one suitable for more recent processors. I don't really want all the hassle of buying an old one on ebay!

Thanks for any help.

I'm fairly sure you could even go to the backstreets of Bangalore and ask for a new P3 motherboard and they wouldn't have one.

The online retailers like scan.co.uk do pre-tested bundles of mobo/cpu/memory, that would probably be your best bet.

Aye, you'll be looking 2nd hand for a P3 board I imagine... however as has been said, you could get a new mobo, CPU and memory (if need be) for <£70-80 and end up with a significantly upgraded PC, even if it's the lower end of the spectrum for today's machines.

The trouble is that you have to be careful with these motherboard bundles. They are brilliant value - no dout about that - but they'll all ATX mobos these days. If the old machine is P3 vintage then it may be an old AT case.
So suddenly you need a new case. And a new PSU too.
Even if your case is ATX, your PSU might not be able to handle a modern mobo - happened to me last year and I had to rush out and buy a new PSU.

I think eBay is your best bet though. You'll never be able to buy a mobo for a P3 new these days.

All P3's should be ATX, personally I wouldn't waste the money and would upgrade the machine.

Looking on a few sites, you could get a AMD sempron 2200 or 2400, motherboard and 256mb of ddr ram for under £50 including vat, plus delivery.

This seems good value, but I can't find any sites offering for this price. Please let me know where you've seen this.

Searching for 'Pentium III' is a good start, but I suggest ("pentium III","pentium 3") (motherboard, "mother board", mobo, "m'board", "main board", mainboard, bundle) is possibly more targetted.

I really must stress that the risk of incompatability with your existing system is almost as high buying a replacement like this as a matched bundle at, say, Novatech. And you're not going to get any performance hike either.
