The majority of people drive in excess of the speed limit on a motorway (of those who can); only a few will toe the line and keep within the speed limit. One of my colleagues at work is of the latter variety, he IS slow, but he thinks this makes him safe. He is also a numpty. On several occasions I have seen him stubbornly sit in lane 2/3 while I safely cruise past in lane 1.

Imagine my surprise I heard he had an accident on the motorway this morning. Another colleague saw him stranded on the M3, a mile after J4 northbound, the front !!! of his car having sustained damage. Thankfully, he was not injured. If you saw a small crumpled blue car on the hard shoulder early this morning, that was him.
How he did it I still don’t know (I’ll find out next week), but I do know this: the accident occurred on a straight section of motorway, driving conditions were good, the traffic (at that time of day/week) is relatively light, he was not near a junction and he would have been among the few who were not speeding.

What could this suggest?

I don’t want to kick anyone when they are down, especially when their p&j is damaged, but I can’t help but feel a little smug about it.

I'm always sorry to hear about people having shunts, even if no one is hurt in the process. At the very least it means damage to your P & J, plus all the upset and inconvenience.

I can well understand your feelings in this case, and it will be interesting to hear what happened.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Debris on the carriageway? Could have taken evasive action and lost it? I saw a kitchen sink in the middle of the M4 once luckily it was on the white lines between the middle and outside lane - there was a van on the hard shoulder a bit further on looking like it had lost something!

I have a mate exactly like that He'll cruise along in the middle lane at 60 totally oblivious to people overtaking, undertaking and flashing their lights to get him to move over.

With him I'd reckon that his style of driving means that he often isn't concentrating and has no idea what's around him most of the time.

As for your mates accident, hmmmm? Somebody pulling out infront of him with no indication? Or maybe hitting the brakes in order to avoid missing their turn off? Were other cars involved btw or did he hit some road furniture?

Aber he should have had time to react given the slow speed... At slow speed he should have been able to see the road furniture.... Is a scam not oad furniture of a sort ?

Und again - even if someone pulled in front without indicatings - he should still be driving mit COAST ...und this means he observes the road position of twazak und anticipates that he might pulls out without the mirror. Und as for the cutter in....fault could be apportioned by these silly inusance companies on basis that he should be watching the road und hnot hogging a middle lane at inappropriately slow speed for condition.

As you might have guessed, he was not at work on Friday, hence so I don't know the details. I'll hopefully find out the full story on Monday, then I'll post an update.

Update

From the horses’ mouth:

“It was my fault, I shunted the guy in front. I was trundling along at 55-60 in the offside lane (lane 3), when a woman driver a few cars in front changed lanes without indication. The car behind braked hard, the car behind that braked harder and I couldn't stop in time.”

A case of him being on autopilot, following the bumper in front. He’s a bit annoyed about it, but otherwise he’s OK.

I was spot on about him being a lane 2/3 numpty
