Monetising Apps/Websites
Discussion
Does anyone have any views on which strategies are most effective for monetising apps and websites? The way I see it is there are a few options:
1) Upfront purchase cost (applicable to apps only)
2) Subscription charges (only relevant for certain types of app/website)
3) Advertising revenue (both apps and websites)
I guess it's also possible to use a combination of the above.
I have an idea for an app but it's not entirely unique. An existing service exists but it's a service that you have to pay for. The existing offering really doesn't make full use of the potential either (IMO). I was wondering if it's worthwhile putting together something similar but making it free to use. This means I would only be able to make revenue from options 1 and 3 above. Given that I was also intending to make it available via a website, that only really leaves me with option 3.
Presumably the correct strategy is dependent on the volume of users. The site will only be of use to people in the UK, and I would guess that only a small subset of the UK population would actually use it (I'm yet to do research on this).

There's other options for revenue as far as I see it.
1) Provide a basic app, but with the option to buy something with better functionality.
2) We use an app where we pay for specific services. The app is car software based,so if we wish to download a specific function - for example to make keys work,we pay an upfront fee. We are generally quite happy to pay this.

Someone I know created a white label app and sold it companies in a specific industry. Each company just branded it and had an instant App which (I think) the guy updated with relevant new sector information and which the companies could also add their content.
This is now more difficult to do as Apple have cracked down heavily on Apps based on templates. plasticpig said:
