I have an IS300h which is a nice enough car but today I had a ride in something that hit 60 in about 4.5 seconds which did get me grinning and wondering a little though it may come to nothing.

I love the comfort and refinement of the Lexus, I can't be bothered with a manual gearbox but I do use the paddles more than I though I would when I got it, and of course it's pretty clean and has good fuel economy.

I'd ever go and buy the £100k Merc that can be had for £8k because when it breaks it'll ruin me and being able to park it on the drive without worrying about waking up with a knife to my throat would be nice.

Is there anything that I should be looking at? Almost a Japanese AMG/M equivalent I guess. IS-F is the obvious one.

I have always been put off the ISF by the fact that every review mentions the ride being extremely hard.

Something German I'd have thought. Audi RSx or BMW Mx is what instantly came to mind

If it is fast but refined you want, so not necessarily sporty handling, then how about a Jaguar XJR, Audi S8, BMW 760i etc? Bargains to be had on then when a couple of years old.

Maybe a GS450h would be the next step. Not sure you could get a 600h in budget.

Auto, ride and comfort over handling and AMG fast, how about a Tesla?

Cheaper AMGs don't have to break the bank. Something like a CLS or E 55/63 might suit.

I would say the same. I have a CLS63, got a very low mileage example but even one with 50k on the clock can be had for £15k. They're not crippling to to run as long as you don't mind 15-20mpg. Also the CLS/E63 or 55s aren't quite the targets of thefts like the C63 is.

Even non-car types I've spoken to know the C63 as it's lairy, loud and aggressively styled. The other AMGs of that era aren't quite as in your face but you still get awesome engines.

Just some food for thought OP. smile

I would suggest these are worth a further look too - not bad looking, individual, they are very fast and sound good, if you go for a sport tech then you get self drive capabilities - 4wd is an option and the drive train is very similar to the Lexus IS (albeit with a proper auto not a cvt)

I have an IS too (company car tax was lower) but i was close to going for a Q50 Hybrid - 24 hour test drive was a lot of fun!

So a bit left field v what I said in the OP but anyone driven a BMW M140i?

I'm sure there's plenty of threads to dig into but thought I'd mention it.

Quick, fun to drive but not anything like as refined or comfortable as a Lexus. They are setup on the sporty side of things and are bases on BMWs lower end product as opposed to a Lexus IS, which should feel a little bit better made and more comfort orientated.

An M140i is an awesome bit of kit, but I'm not sure it's what you were looking for.

What sort of 'budget' are you looking at?

I keep looking at e55 kompressors, a plain looking car but plenty of power to unleash.
