The current family car's lease ends soon and I am going to take out a new one but would like a car that really quiet inside when driving. The C250 diesel I have is just so loud from tyre noise etc.

Would like a car that's calm and peaceful to drive.

I don't want electric and can spend circa 250 plus VAT on a business contract hire.

Any idea's??

Avoid anything with big wheels and rubber band tyres, i'd probably look towards something from Volvo.

This, refinement is it's best quality. The ride is also fantastic on the standard suspension and there are good deals to be had on them too.

Funnily enough I am looking at either an Audi or a Volvo. I do like the new xc40 but apparently it's not that quiet. Xc60 is supposed to be better.

May have a test drive it or just take a risk and buy an old school 740i........

I've just reluctantly scrapped a Volvo V40 and every time I drove it after driving my wife's Focus I was amazed at how quiet it was.
I used Kumho Ecsta tyres which I really liked, nice and grippy in all conditions and quiet (cheap too!).

I am also looking for the same as the OP and everything I have read suggests the A4 is very refined. I always thought that was comparing it to its rivals (3 series / C class / XE) rather than cars from the next class up so hearing its better than a 5 series is good to hear.

Could I ask if those recommending the A4 had the acoustic side glass fitted? and whether that makes much difference. I am always worried the good reviews are on cars with this option added and was wondering if its worth adding it to the car.

Thanks

VW Passat 1.4 GTE

All I can hear often at motorway speeds is the wind whistling past the wing mirrors.

Merc E-class are a decent price right now. The E220d is the latest 2.0 diesels that's meant to be quieter than the old 2.1. Plus the E-class will have better refinement than the C-class.

Seat Ateca 1.4 SE Technology is the quietest sub £30,000 car I've ever driven.

Not exciting, but does the job.

Believe it or not a FF Range Rover on 20" with medium profile tyres is very quiet.

I think any car on small wheels, I’ve got a Astra eco flex company car, it’s silent inside, the Diesel engine is very very quiet on startup and under load, very well damped from wind noise

If it was my own money, either a Lexus or a Volvo on small wheels, or some sort of Citroen.

As others have mentioned I think the key is to buy a with small wheels. The cars I leased before all had massive wheels!

Will have a test drive of some cars and see what I like. I still really want to buy an old school V8 bmw but I guess I would be a too much of a gamble.
