I’m doing some work in Wolverhampton at the moment and went into a Chippy. Asked for Chicken and chips.

I got something that was best described as the reason for the UK obesity epidemic.

BATTERED CHIPS!

Yes, chips dipped in batter then fried. I refused them and asked for normal chips which they reluctantly served.

It must be a Black Country thing and it made me think what else is out there, in certain towns or areas that you just don’t see elsewhere?

They're known as orange chips and they're delicious. It's not a thick batter, it just makes the chips crunchy.

I love them but don't get over that way very often (which is good for my diet)

Yes! They were orange. Took a pic, the offending article is obvious on comparison to a normal chip.

So much nicer than normal chips.

Give Newbridge chippy a try if you get another chance, pretty sure that's the one we use when we venture over that way and it's always decent.

Thanks. I’m staying about a mile from there so I’ll visit and report next week.

What other oddities would I find on my travels?

It's grim up north, but they def have the best local foods. Orange chips, gravy and chips, scollop butty, hindle wakes, chicken parmo, stottie cake, pan haggerty, rage pie, butter pie, saveloy dip, deepfried Mars bars, etc. lick

Laverbread in Wales. It’s lush. Not bread.

Laverbread, in its naked cooked form, was never something that appealed to me as a youngster growing up in Neath.

However, there was a great butcher in the Uplands area of Swansea (where I lived for a couple of years) who did pork and laverbread sausages. Now they were proper tasty!

I really missed it when we were up in the Midlands for 15 years. Rissoles & Joes too. Used to bring it back with me.

Now back in the Neath area so I can indulge often (in the Laverbread).

Either raw or cooked, I love it.

Was that the one by the junction ? I used to live in Uplands as a Student - I dont recall laverbread sausages in the late 90's sadly , but I do recall the excellent ( and massive breakfasts at the uplands cafe smile

They tried to kill me on Scotland!

Went in a cafe (with a serious hangover), ordered black pudding, chips and beans, mug of tea, bread and butter.

The black pudding was THE WHOLE THING BATTERED.

I felt st for days.

I had a battered creme egg in Scotland once when I was up there on a mountain biking holiday. They'll batter anything those Scots!
