Just say that, hypothetically, you had a classic car sitting in the garage (tax exempt) that had been off the road for 6/7 years and had not been taxed or SORN'ed in that period what sort of fine would the owner be in for if he approached the DVLA to do the SORN now? Has anyone been done this?

Funny you should ask that!
The Golfs been sitting idly in the garage for quite some time now and it was taken off the road before before the rules on SORN were introduced.
I recieved a renewal for the tax before the sorn came into law and on the attached paperwork it said that if the car was off the road ie being restored, no sorn need be applied for.....so its been off road without a sorn since before sorn was introduced.
Also, what if its a car thats been sat in a barn for the last 20 years and it had been buried under a pile of straw so it wasnt exactly "on your mind" for the period?

Dunno whether theyll play up...probably will..

PS just looked on dvla site and found this:

"The SORN scheme was introduced on 31 January 1998 and applies to vehicles where a licence was in force on or after the date. It does not apply if your vehicle was unlicensed before this date.

Please note : An acknowledgement letter will be issued on receipt of a SORN declaration."

From what I've heard elsewhere this sentence actually means

"if we actually do process your SORN application we will send you a letter. You had better make sure you get it, because if we mess up and fail to process SORN and you don't point out our error we will pursue you for non-payment and issue whatever fines we see fit. And, before you ask, we don't accept our errors as mitigating circumstances on your behalf. Don't forget that there is no proper appeals process either."

As stated SORN does not apply to a GB vehicle if:

no Licence was in force for veh on 1.1.1998 and,
a Licence hasn't been taken out since and,
vehicle has not been used on a road after that date.

Thanks for the replies, looks like I might just be ok, now I just need to find out exactly when the last licensed expired...probably 2 Jan 98 knowing my luck.

Deltafox - would be interested to know how you get on if you are going to contact the DVLA.
