Couple of biggish bills looming on my Saab estate is prompting a more serious than usual browse of the classifieds.

Need a cheap (sub-£4000) large estate or MPV for school run duties, tip runs, camping trips (so needs a big boot) and generally shipping kids around.

Looking at a six or seven seater as it would be handy to be able to ship my elderly parents around along with the kids occasionally.

Ones that spring to mind immediately are the Citroen Grand Picasso and Ford Galaxy at around 2007-2008 vintage, but what else is around? Maybe something less well known will give more for my budget

You can't beat a Galaxy for space but you just have to be mindful that at the 4k price bracket there is potential for clutch and DMF problems. They all seem to go any time after about 80k miles. they also have a 10 year 100k mile timing belt change so check that

The clutch noises on my 56 plate galaxy was one of the reasons I chopped mine in.

I replaced it with a 7 seat E-class. You won't get the grandparents in the back but it's ok for kids. 4k might get you a decent w211 maybe.

A few things about that 807

It's 10.5 years old. It's on borrowed time
It's an Auto. Auto 807/C8/Ulysse's aren't good. Not good at all
It's £500pa to tax it
It's about £2-£2.5K overpriced

I ran a Vauxhall Zafira as a private hire cab for a year. It did the job, was reliable, quicker than I'd imagined it would be and was thoroughly depressing to drive.

They're cheap though and comfortable enough.

If you can live with fuel consumption a Shogun could be an option.

I just found a great car on Auto Trader.

Renault Scenic? Had 2010 for nearly 2 years and put nearly 50k on it. It's OK to drive lots of space needed nothing apart from servicing and tyres.
Don't listen to all the crap about Renaults reliability the 2 we have have been nothing but reliable.

They are cheap, but that might be just a bit too depressing.
Plus, a mate had one and it seemed to have a voracious appetite for gearboxes. He had one replaced under warranty and then had to replace it again a year or two later.

I think a car is what you make of it, after knowing someone having a 1.6 Petrol zafira for 8 years and in that time replace the rear coil springs and a lambda sensor, I’d say they are reliable cars, admitted the mileage wasn’t a lot but it was used daily for small trips.

Yea they aren’t the best but if you want something predictable and cheap then I can’t see you go wrong, just have to pick the right model, heard the diesels are not very good though.

This line piqued my interest. Thinking outside the box. I like it.

You might want to look at the Honda FR-V. Six seats, big boot, decent to drive, choice of petrol and diesel engines.

Lots of miles, but that doesn't matter, because it's a Honda. Sips from the black pump. £950
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Or maybe sir would prefer fewer miles, and a car that drinks from the green pump? £1,000
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Perhaps a car in a brighter colour, with even fewer miles? £1,250
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

If none of those float sir's boat, how about a one-owner, 80k mile motor? £1,350
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

There are more, but you get the idea. wink

Lol

A Honda frv isn’t exactly an adrenaline chariot either!
