Company I’m interested in has appointed a receiver but apart from calling them how can I find out who they are and also what’s the protocol if I want to buy a bit of it - never been in this scenario before.

Search The London Gazette. All appointments of administrators have to be published in it. In the first instance I would ring the administrators and express your interest.

Ask if they have appointed an agent and ask for their details too

Appointment docs should be filed at Companies House - find them here: https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/

Should also give you a bit of a clue as to how far in the st they are, at least as far as their records permit...
