Anyone have the Barbour Beacon Sport jacket?
Discussion
Being a massive Bond fan, I love the Barbour ToKiTo jacket that was worn in Skyfall, with the available version of said being the Beacon Sport. I'm wondering if anyone has the Beacon Sport who could give me an honest review on it? I'm not what you would call slim, and I'm weighing up the Barbour Lutz, or paying the extra £125 (Lutz = £175, Beacon Sport = £300) for the jacket I've always wanted. That said, despite being a Bond fan and wanting the actual jacket, there is no point if it's no good and less usable than the Lutz.
Thanks

My suggestion is to try the coat on to ensure it fits. I liked the look of the coat but at 46 inch chest, large was too small and XL was too big.
Daniel Craig would probably have had the original tailored by wardrobe as they hang much more baggy in real life, like most Barbour jackets. Barbour re-released the original but the designer threatened to sue so the ones I tried at the factory shop a few years ago had a hastily sewn Barbour badge over the pocket to cover the original designer badge before they formally renamed it. I eventually found a Belstaff jacket with belt that fit me perfectly instead of the Beacon but always try the Beacon on if I see one. With it being an open ‘suit jacket’ type coat, the Beacon didn’t feel suited to harsh outdoor work unless you got a larger size to wear jumpers underneath which would then make it look a bit baggy. It’s also quite a short coat in the cloth and the models advertising it usually are rake thin (I’m the other end of the scale!)
As soon as you get a bigger size, the proportions are ruined to my eye, I believe DC spent a lot of time working out for Skyfall so the coat would have looked better on him anyway.....
I googled a place in East York’s specialising in tailored wax coats that after contacting them would produce a version that fit me from scratch, but I can’t see a time where I’d wear it now over the Belstaff. The Belstaff was stupid money though (in my eyes) but has been my main coat for four years so proving its value, however if I had time again I’d probably buy from Holden who offer a range at lower price than high street where I got mine.
Originals occasional appear on eBay for lots of money, google jamesbondlifestyle for more links and details about it.
Good luck!

Barbour factory shop is a kick in the pants away from where I live , they have a part that sells the latest gear at full rrp, the other is full of samples , slight faulted goods and end of lines .
I've had some good stuff out of there over the years , currently using a quilted fleece lined long jacket which name escapes me for £69.

I’ve got a Barbour beacon. The sizing is more fittted than other Barbour jackets but I’m still the same size. I really like mine, it’s cut more like a waxed sports jacket or blazer than a coat though and It’s not very warm.
You see them on sale now and then, I wouldn't pay full RRP so I looked out for a few months and got mine for £305, from country attire.

it’s normally nearer £400.
If you google image pictures of it, you’ll see it looks very different on different people.
Plus in most store images it looks heavily waxed, but it soon looks less shiny and nicely worn after a few times out in the weather.
Honestly though the cut in this jacket is fitted though. If you're a fatty it’s going to be hard to get one that looks right imho.

I have a Lutz in XL and it's fitted and snug despite me being L generally (ooer...) One thing I would say is that the collar is corduroy like the traditional jacket whereas the Beacon's collar is waxed so although it's a similar cut it's more a traditional Barbour as a sports jacket than cut price Bond jacket. IYSWIM.
I've got both the Lutz and the ToKiTo; I was looking for a 'hardy' jacket that was water/windproof so these fit the bill.
I wear the Lutz the most often, it folds down very small, wrinkles drop out, keeps the elements off you well enough and does 'smart/casual' effortlessly.
The TokiTo is a bit more fancy in the finishing (there's a lot of detail to enjoy like the leather strip around the cuff) but still gets out occasionally - it's an autumn/spring in town for drinks sort of jacket.
Both suffer to some degree from condensation build up inside, especially over the shoulders - a jumper underneath works best funny enough - and is also needed if the temp drops as these aren't insulated jackets.
I'm quite slim/narrow on the shoulders and I think the cut favours that build, especially as like I say, they are tailored as a jacket rather than a coat.
The TokiTo is nicely done, heavy on detail, substantial and smart - the Lutz is a good practical wear jacket for drizzly walks to the pub.

I'm just going to repeat what others have said - this is sold as a 'slim fitting' jacket and definitely cut as such. Looks good but I tend to wear it as a 'smart casual' jacket as opposed to an all out 'it's cold and raining'. Sizewise I would say that it is aimed more a those who are XL around the chest rather than the waist.
But, as always, find one, try it on and see if you like it! Good luck.
