Can anyone help?

I need to fit a 4-spd Sierra gearbox onto my 1600cc OHV Escort engine in my Geep. It is fitted onto the engine already but doesn't seem to want to mount onto the car frame.

Can this be done or should I be looking at a manual box instead??

Thanks.

Hi
By wont fit into the car frame do you mean it will not go past the mounting plates that hold the gearbox in via the gearbox rubber/steel support mount?

If so then this is a common problem if also trying to fit the Sierra 5 speed manual box.

The Jago chassis gearbox mounting points were set up in one of two ways until the very last ones which had the sierra option listed (so in effect making it three mounting point types).
The basic set ups were xflow or OHC.
On bothe types it is often a case of trimming back the mounting plates. Depending on the original spec (xflow or OHC) will dictate how much plate is left after you have taken back the required amount. In some cases it is a case of welding on new plates away from the part you have cut back so you have enough metal to bolt the gearbox mounting to.

If I remember correctly on the Technical site I have got the basic instructions on the xflow to OHC page.

Yes- I had to take 8-10mm off the chassis brackets to get my 5spd Sierra box to fit. However, the holes were still available to bolt on some angle iron to extend the brackets rearwards to meet the gearbox crossmember.

If you need a pic, email me offlist via my profile.

Thanks for the replies guys. I forgot to mention that the box was an auto. After cutting back the mounting plates I discovered that all the gearbox pipes, fittings and general width wouldn't let it fit between the chassis legs on which the mounting plates reside.

I have now just bought (this afternoon) a Mk2 Escort gearbox so I will try that route first - and probably end up welding the mounting plates back on too!!

Thanks again.
