Best insurer for a 17yr old boy?
Discussion
The time has come and my son turns 17 on the 4th Feb so hoping to bag a bargain in the post Christmas sales for his first car.
Standard fare stuff - has to be 3dr and narrowed down to an 09+ Suzuki Swift 1.2, Seat Ibiza 1.2, Pug 207 1.4 (subject to finding the right colour) or perhaps a Corsa 1.0/1.2
Any recommendations for insurers? Preferably without a black box as I'll be driving it as well so don't want to get him in trouble!!
Usual compare sites are showing approx £600 while provisional then £1300-£1400 for his 1st year after passing his test.
Are there any insurers that don't rack the price after passing?

Pretty sure they all rack it up after passing
Went through this last year had to do the whole comparison thing , found Halifax cheapest for us at £380 until he passed 5 months later and then a further £700 , all in all I was pretty happy with that
This is TPFT on a 08 Citroen C1 with SDP and commuting , no black box
Halifax renewal was laughable at £1500 but switched to Endsleigh (I think) for £680 for the year

He's a boy and wants something that at least looks sporty even if it only has 10bhp - so has to be 3dr!
Thanks for the suggestions - will check them out.
Aviva quoted £7,778 a year for a car worth £3k !!!
Remember the value of the insured car bears little resemblance to the quote as he may be driving £100 banger but crash into a Ferrari!!Thanks for the suggestions - will check them out.

Let’s face it, most 17 year olds will have a bump of one sort another, hopefully very minor of course but likely all the same.
I found Tesco to be one of the cheapest on the comparison sites and when I rang them direct to my surprise they offered me a decent discount on top (25 or 30%) just for having a clubcard in the household. Don't know if that's still the case but might be worth a try. Also if you look at any 207s with the VTI engine check the chain has been done, they are also known for water ingress to ECU.

If he wants something that looks sporty then it is going to cost him. Simple really. Thanks for the suggestions - will check them out.

Just because the car is cheap doesn't mean the insurance will be. A £100 shed can still cause as much damage as a hyper car and it's the insurer that will be footing the bill.
What I found when I was younger is that fully comp was actually cheaper than TPFT. Also leaving the car parked on the road rather than drive or garaged brought the price down.
Try looking at rarer cars folk his age tend not to crash. Smaller engines don't always mean lower insurance.
I feel sorry for youg people driving these days as insurance can be very pricey.
A 3dr may not look sporty to us, but to a 17 year old it does so I can understand why he doesn't' want a 5dr hatchback that looks like an old boy drives it. I didn't want a 5dr when I was 17 either!
His mum is insisting on euroncap 5 star which limits the cars in our budget and I don't like the look of the Aygo type things where the rear seat virtually touches the rear window, so for me the really small hatches are out.
Fiesta's are over priced and along with the corsa they are more to insure as more young drivers have them so there are more claims on them.
The swift is not the usual 1st choice but they do get a good write up and are well spec'd compared to others in this price range.
Will dig out the Tesco club card - got to be worth asking!!

Check out some of the just add fuel offerings? Seat are doing the new Ibiza with free insurance but I fear it's 5dr only.
For a 17 yr old ? My mate brought his son a new Punto when they were doing this deal , lasted the boy for years but free FC insurance on a 17 yr old boy is a big discount off the price of a new car so its almost unheard of today
Those just add fuel deals seem the way to go at the mo.
There's a Pug/Citroen dealer across the road from my office and they do state on their billboard that 17-21 year old's will have their driving monitored by a black box.
Another option is Tesco bank black box insurance. A lot more lenient with your driving style unless you are being very very silly, and even then they will warn you before taking any action - 3 strikes IIRC - and is mainly used to monitor mileage, if he's doing something silly and stacks it they will investigate though!

When I were a lad (now a depressingly long time ago) Co-operative Insurance Services (CIS) was the preferred choice - always pretty cheap, and they allowed driving other cars Third Party Only, which I understand most places now don't permit until one is 25.
That's who I went with too many years ago
You need to consider something that lots of newbie drivers aren't crashing, that will make a big difference to premiums.
Ref the increase once passed, this is because whilst learning they are supervised by "an experienced driver" whereas when they pass, they will only be supervised by their mates and maybe some hotties at the local Mcd's

Start with Confused or whatever comparison site you prefer and Admiral or one of its sister companies usually crops up in the top 5 or so.
Then call them and see if you can improve on whatever their price is by using one of the others cheaper above them in the list.
You can often get a reduction in price if your son agrees to a named driver addition, being you etc.
Limiting the mileage can help too.
All Insurers will charge more once the test passed for reasons already stated.
I went through this process 3 times with my 3 boys and each time Admiral were the cheapest.
Serious bore each renewal and be prepared to spend an hour of your life you'll never get back.
"Sensible" car helps - Fiesta , Seat etc up to 1200cc.
Once you can get them to that 1st year NCB allowance that makes a big difference but unless you go the illegal " fronted " way unfortunately you have to bite the ebullet and hope !
Good luck.

Interesting to see this topic. I am a "new" driver in UK as well and its been a nightmare
I am really struggling about car insurance, as a foreigner.
First driving license em 2006 (in Brazil, so does not count for NDC), I'm 29yo, married, have a son, and even the s
ttiest s
tboxes are no less than £1200 to insure. What a pain.
I'll soon have the UK driving license, but dont know if it will make things any cheaper...
