Not had a TV for 3-4 yrs now, the Projectors are just so useful.. As Big_T will attest, Playing Colin McRaE Rally or some kick ass fighint game on the XBox on a 150" screen ....
then switching to the TV.. and watching it in high res..
then switching to the Laptop and sticking the spreadsheet you;re working on at 1280x1024..
then switching to the DVD player
I am sure you get the idea.
Bulb in mine lasts 2500-3000 hours (at 8 hours a day thats still over a year!) and at £99 for a replacement bulb.. well
The added bonus over a TV is the space saving, no need for a bulky TV, and when its off, no lost wallspace like a Plasma TV

There are two different types of video projection systems. The one like Jamie's, uses a halogen lamp as mentioned above, there are two types of projector available within this type, LCD and DLP, but without boring the pants of you they both offer big screen projection with half decent picture quality. The downside to these projectors is similar to inkjet printers, in that the consumables are expensive. Jamie's Sony is the cheapest lamp replacement I have come across, being £100. Be warned, most are typically between £250-350 and they can last from 2 years or 3 months. Also replacment lamps are only guaranteed for a maximum of 6 months, most being 3 month warranty so you have to be very careful with them. Golden rules with these type of projector is once the lamp is on, it is bad practice to turn it off within 30 mins of switching in on. Also never move the projector while the lamp is on.
The other type of projector uses proprietry glass CRT tubes, as in a television set. The only difference being that these projectors have three tubes, one for each colour. They are older technology but the picture quality is not comparable with LCD/DLP, they are the choice of professional installers, and real cinemas.
I used to install high end home cinema systems as part of my home automation company which I sold last year.

atm, Sony VPL CX-5
Its an upgrade to the last Sony which was onyl 1400 lumens.
Works a treat, accepts USB for mouse, and has Sony Memory Stick slot for Gallerying DigiCam Pix.
Composite, SVideo and DSub (Monitor) input.

Have Sony in my classroom at school.
Fantastic for Showing what's on the PC, but even better for showing films at the end of term. Quality on mine is excellent but they do vary acroos the school, depending on when they were bought, and what make they are. Don't get the cheapest.
Added: If you are getting one, be careful to note where you are mounting it and how far from the wall it is. This will govern picture size. Some of the ones we have you can adjust small, medium and large. Most depend on how far from the wall they are, with only a limited size adjustment. (this makes sense if you've got one, honest.)
