Part of my daily commute has a dual carriageway temporarily reduced from 50mph to 30mph, with both lanes still running. I believe there are some late-night roadworks, but nothing during the working day - yet the reduced limit applies 24/7.

I have been doing my best to stick to 30mph, but it feels most unsafe when 98% of drivers are flashing past at 50 and above - including HGVs!

What to do? Obey the speed limit and risk being rear-ended by one of Eddie's finest - or go with the flow and risk a tug by BiB?

No cameras? Ignore it or go a different way.

No fixed cameras. Going a different way would involve a 40-mile detoureek

I’d say go with the flow and be extra vigilant, if there was a police car anywhere you’d know because the brake lights would start going on one by one.

Safety should come above legality IMO.

If everyone is doing 50 why would you be the one to receive a pull from the police?

Are you sure the 30mph isn't just an advised limit?

If it's lit up in yellow that means it's not enforceable.

I had a very similar situation. From NSL (70) down to 30. Everyone did 60. I went with the flow. If an HGV came, they might not be able to get out. Such reductions are just ridiculous.

Look up the Temporary TRO

Dual carriage way near me is usually 70mph limit, but has signs reducing it to 50mph for road works. I looked up the TRO and it says that the reduced speed limit only applies from 6.00pm to 6.00am.

If you look it up, you may find similar

A35 last year... soon enough it’ll be the same again. Just outside Bournemouth.

Just make sure, you are not the car at the front of the chain.

They will be the unlucky ones as you'll get to brake before you come into view of the camera.

They did this on the Aston Expressway some time back.

If anyone knows that road it's positively dangerous trying to do 30mph in free flowing traffic conditions.

If in doubt drive at 30mph, avoiding fines & points should always take priority over the possibility of inconveniencing others. Let it be their look-out not yours. And then as already suggested there's Murphy's Law.

If you own a white or a red car then you stand a higher chance of a pull than say a black, blue or green one smile

Easy said but when you've got half of "Escape from Birmingham" up your rear end it's not so easy to do so I share the OP's sentiments however simple it is to just say "stick to the limit and sod everyone else".

I’d go with the flow of traffic. I’d prefer to arrive somewhere safe, than risk it at a stupid low speed if everyone else is ignoring it. The chances of points are still minuscule. If there were cameras there’s, then the locals would know and it’d be the odd driver speeding, not everyone

Just put cruise control on and sit there at 30. Why is this a problem? If people want to overtake they can.
