Had my ancient Mac book on eBay and been plagued by this.

Sale going well with genuine bidders with high feedback then at last minute a no feedback user bids a ludicrous amount, wins but then no contact and then eBay contact me to say they are unregistered?

Has happened twice so last night I kept a watch. Sure enough with an hour to go another no feedback bidder jumps in and bids a silly large amount and effectively shuts down the genuine bids.

This time I got the bid cancelled but annoyingly the laptop only went for 20 quid. On the first auction the genuine bidder had bid 70 pounds but then went and bought elsewhere as soon as he lost.

These phantom bidders also have only joined eBay on the last day of auction.

This has only happened with my laptop not with my other auctions for furniture.

Seems common with tech stuff according to eBay forums but my question is:

What's the bloody point? Feking annoying and costs punters money and time.

Why don't you set your bid settings to block all bids from people with below x feedback?

I have done now, although I think the banning bidders without a PayPal account is pretty useful too.

To be honest I'm more a buyer then a seller so until last night I had no idea that you could set certain parameters.

I'm just puzzled at what kick do these idiots get. I suppose it's an online version of knock down ginger.

The assumption would have to be that it's someone selling a similar product to yours with an auction finishing a few hours after yours.

It stops the real buyers buying your item so they buy the other one.

Years ago, I had someone bid on a tidy little Ford Escort I had listed. He won the auction by sniping in the last few seconds but then I had no payment and no contact. This annoyed me as it was the second time I'd had it listed. A quick view of his profile and history showed that he was clearly a dealer and done this to other people, judging from the bad comments left in positive feedback (yeah, I know).

So with a degree of sneakiness, I made another eBay account and then started my long run of buying cars from him. He usually had three or four cars listed at any one time and I won loads of them! I mean, I never paid, obviously, but it kept me amused for an embarrassingly long time. I still don't know why he didn't block me from bidding but the angry messages from him made it all worth it.
